I agree she doesn't look eggy. The low water level isn't to help the labyrinth organ develop...that's what the heater and covered top are for. The low water level is so the male doesn't get too tired going down to the bottom and bringing the eggs/babies back to the top and just stop doing it...

I'd say the top is a VT, the two bottoms appear to be from a VTXCT cross as you can see the ray extensions, but they are still VTs...not true combtails yet.

I don't put a filter in my tank until after the fry are 2 weeks old. Also- you have to condition the two in separate tanks. It sounded as if you wanted to put them together from the start...that's a no go for sure. IMO, more reading needs to be done.

You'll probably be flamed once more people actually see this post. Males shouldn't be kept with females, ever, unless for breeding. It's too difficult to know what may happen when you turn your back. They're peaceful now, but you just never know. Haven't you posted pictures of all your fish...

IMO, they'll be okay w/o a top-- they've got what looks like 3 or so inches of space above the rim where the water isn't filled. See if someone on here can take them (in the buy, sell section), and if not, I'd take them back and just explain that they are male plakats sold to you as females...

Also wanted to add that the "side by side" swimming you're noticing-- that's the attack stance. You captured it very well in one of your pictures. They almost seem to dance in a circle around each other...right next to each other...both flaring-- then BAM-- one of them strikes.

They're both males. Both are flaring, and ventrals are longer than typical females. They need to be separated. Don't go by what they're doing now...go by what they WILL do eventually, due to their nature.
