I was expecting "I beg to differ" post and that's why I wrote "you will be amazed" :D I'm not a big believer of bacteria in bottle (you can read my post -experiment with bio-spira which didn't go that well) but I was amazed ....

Buy a small bottle of StressZyme and dump the content of entire bottle into your tank & filter and then wait for couple of days and test (do not change water) ... You will be amazed to see the results :cool:

N2 = Nitrogen NO2 = Nitrite NO3 = Nitrate

Seems like bacteria bloom if you are trying to cycle a new tank .... You need to invest in a water test kit (preferably liquid one) ASAP ....

I have found from experience that very substantial amount of bacteria actually live on substrate. Whenever I vacuum more than 20% of gravel and disturb the bacteria colony, ammonia and nitrite shows up on test. Ammonia and Nitrite disappear after couple of days as the bacteria colony...

Did you cycle your tank ?

Nitrifying bacterias starved to death since you took the fish out 3 weeks back .... They processed all NH3 to NO2 and then died because there was no continuous source of NH3...

"i replaced the filter foam" - I think this was your biggest mistake .... You should never replace foam without cycling ... nitrifying bacterias live here .... since it a new foam so your tank started cycling ... losing the heater is probably the secondary cause ...

You took the source of ammonia out too early and all nitrifying bacteria are dead (because lack of NH3) ... No offense but I bet :hyper: your tank is NOT cycled and you have to start all over again ...

10ppm nitrate (NO3) is fine (probably your tap water has it) ... above 40 ppm might cause problems ... If you want to avoid Nitrates completely, do a 60-70% water change and use distilled water ...

Cleaned the sponge filters (lots of gunk! as soon as I cleaned these rotten stuff, ammonia reading dropped from .25 to .1 ppm) , changed 25% water and ready to add Bio-Sprira. Water stat: Ammonia 0.1 ppm, Nitrite: 2.5 ppm, Nitrate: 20 ppm

Lately I had an ich outbreak :angry: in my 10 gallon tank and applied some formalin based medicine. Ich is not still 100% cured (only one platy has two tiny white spots) but the medicine screwed up my filter bacteria as my tank is showing .25 ppm ammonia (NH3) and 2 ppm Nitrite (No2) and 15 ppm...

Can you check the water stats one more time and post the reading ..... Are you sure there is no bacterial infection or any parasite infestation ? I don't think one single bully fish can kill so many other fishes by just chasing them ...

After much deliberation I added the second dose of QuickCure. Temperature is 87F. Ammonia reading is still .25 ppm and Nitrite reading is .25 ppm. My fully cycled tank is now cycling again !! :sick:

I can't see these in the water as floating particles but I can see these on the fish. After first couple of days, all white spots were gone but now these are reappearing (on fins, body) despite the fact that I maintained the steady 87F temp. This is probably the second phase and I need to apply...
