Got New Fish But What Are They?

lol, by the time he is big enough to be moved i would have a larger tank

and they all seem to be doing fine now.

about the snails though? will they live ok on the fish food or do i need to get food for them aswell

snails dont need to be fed that i know of (i dont feed mine),, they eat algea and leftover food in my tank (which includes pellets and flakes, they acctually go upside down on the water surface somehow eating the flakes sometimes...)

My shark I have had for a while and he is about 4 inches long and doesn't hurt a thing. to keep you male guppies from fighting you need a ratio of 3 femails to one male. make sure your tank is cycled completely through before adding any new fish. when i first had a tank I added to many fish to fast and "new tank syndrome" killed half of them.

tank size, and was the filter media (the stuff that goes in the filter like sponges and floss) second hand or just the tank? And what size tank, did you cycle (do you know what the cycle is?), and what size tank is it?, this isnt looking good for you.

EDIT: What size tank is it?

i dunno what size it its. 2ft by 1and a half ft by 1 ft. thats all i can tell ya, as i dunno about these things.

my mum showed the guy how big ours was as they had them same size and asked for what type of fish would be suitable

and she also asked if it would be ok to put fish in this early i.e a week without a cycle and he said yes n gave us these and i got the filter with it but changed the sponges and its doing fine

OH MY GOD LOL

most fish store people lie. and dont know what their doing, (thats why i like my big als)

but two feet is like.. im guessing 20gallons or less?

and red tail sharks only grow like 6'' so thats not really "huge"

well you'll need a 3ft tank by the time the shark if fully grown, as they can get fairly fat, and like their swimming space, and if bought up well he/she may go over the 6 inches mark...

when your looking for your upgrade tank take a look here: Juwel Tanks or Clear-Seal Tanks
they have some nice sized tanks there. the rio 180 would be a good size for your next tank :) not too big not too small... just right if it's going to be a community tank. but also watch out for the shark as he may find your guppies appealing for his dinner.

Tell your mum to get you a liquid water testing kit and whilst she's at it to tell the fish shop people off for fibbing about the cycling although it always happens as no-one wants to be the LFS saleman who tells a customer not to buy anything.

You can keep the fish going despite the bad advice by making sure their water is checked/changed regularly. Don't get disheartened if it goes wrong though...you've made a great move by registering on this forum.

I dont find that rtbs's or rainbow sharks get "fat", their rather slim acctually, more length.

tho a 3 ft tank is recomended...

Murph

No they're not slim, they are quite chunky.

I have a RTBS who's about 5 inches long and just under 1 inch around - He grew to this size in less than 12 months (cant be exact about measurements silly beggar wouldn't sit still on the tape measure  )

i dont think my redtailed shark would ever go for any other fish, maby when he is bigger but not yet, i would think if any the betta would. my rts doesnt have the personality for it. hes very peacefull.

and how long does it take before you realise you have a amonia problem, its been 5 days and they are perfectly happy.

and i no i will need a new tank in a year or so so its not really a problem, he is ok for now.

is this just the right amount for the tank then? 6 guppys, rts and a betta?

i was thinking in getting 3 female guppys to stop some fighting between the males

Another couple of days and they will be all gone unless you listen and pay attention to what a lot of people are trying to tell you. You need to either return these fishes to LFS or rehome them to some mature tank until your tank cycles. Read all the topics on cycling (It may take upto 8 weeks to fully cycle a tank) and take actions fast. If you still want to cycle the tank with fish then 1) buy a liquid test kit and test the water parameters every 24 hours (or 12 hours if you have time) and try to keep ammonia and nitrites below .25ppm through frequent water changes. Check out this forum to find whether you can get some mature filter media from a donor near your location (that will cycle your tank faster).
