Where are you? If your near Bolton, Lancashire then you can have my old spare slate. PM me if you want some. Offer open to anyone willing to collect. Also a bucketful of Very White sand here too.
Those are good photos, sounds like you have a pair.
Btw do the Angels not hassle your cardinals? I thought neon & cardinal tetras were the natural food of Angels.
If the plant seems to be doing well is there any need to remove it?
Btw Lorrie, don't get a Fluval 05 on my suggestion. I've no experience of them either. I just picked a 100ltr external that came to mind and that I could find a link for. So wasn't really a recommendation, more me being lazy...
Some manufacturers do overstate their flow-rates. Or rather they state them without media in, which of course is totally unrealistic.
Switching to a small external filter would free up some nice space for your fish. Try this link.
If you mean they are doing a V shape on the surface, they do it to funnel water thru there mouths. This draws some food that they can see on the surface towards there mouths. I think it looks pretty cool.
I don't think it'll work then. I believe it's different bacteria. Also I'd be worried that the pond filter will include some pond parasites.
I'm not sure though, so perhaps someone more knowledgeable will answer soon.
Shrimp would be nice in that size tank. Not that I've ever kept them. Would some easy livebearers like Guppys interest you for the fish side of things?
I've just bought & fitted an APS 1400 in a 200 ltr tank after reading the APS thread on here and using the discount code mentioned. So got it for £51 including next day delivery. Seems good enough but I've nothing to compare it to.
A lot of people seem to recommend the Fluval 305. Have a read...
This is an interesting Thread. Is there also restrictions on the ground floor of a house that has floorboards, UK too? I'd eventually want something over 400 ltr but I'm not sure if that's safe.
OK, thanks guys. I think I'll leave it in there as a nice home for bacteria.
This also solves a problem with my new APS filter & fitting my old media in there as it came with 2 bags of carbon in it. So I'll remove 1 of them and it'll have plenty of room for my old ceramic rings. :good:
No, not removing anything. The carbon is just a standard feature of the filter media. Carbon removes more then meds, doesn't it?
Btw I'm talking 2 different tanks in this thread. External is on my main tank, this Jewul 1 is on another tank.
Floss? I replaced the White layer on the top. Was like cotton & all mushy.
Some of the sponges are black & called carbon. Not sure how they can be made from carbon as they are soft. Anyway I used to boil my carbon to reset it. Do people still that? Can I do it with these black sponges?
Thanks for the advice guys. I'll see how much of the ceramic rings I can add into the new filter during my next water change.
2 more General questions about filters...
The APS manual says to clean the filter every month. What do people think about that? I only clean my filter once every 6...
Well done on the Angel, they do need a deep tank. Most people don't take note of such advice, glad you did. When you platy fry grow up won't your tank be full or will you move them on quickly?
+1 not a good idea at all. Will not only get extremely hot it'll also fluctuate a lot which is even worse. Can you keep a window open at all times? Maybe an air con unit would be necessary.
If not and you can't move it I would research my fish and make sure I only have fish that naturally live...
I've set up my APS 1400 now and am quite happy with it, although not sure where they got the idea that having to pump it is self prime.
Anyway I've decided to ditch my internal filter once the APS is fully working with a bacteria colony. I haven't used any other media in it as the media...
Wow, it really was next day delivery included. Unfortunately as I wasn't expecting that I wasn't in to take delivery. It's sitting in local PO now, ready for me to collect tomorrow morning :)
The fish don't need the light on at all. Lights are just for the plants and for your viewing pleasure, but if you leave them on the fish won't be able to sleep. So leave them off all week. If your uncle is feeding them, then they'll be fine. :good:
There T&C's says subject to availability. I previously subscribed when they had a free Fluval internal as the free gift. They run out of the filter and didn't offer an alternative but still expected me to continue the subscription.
The only problem I have with apple snails is that they keep dying :(
I've one extremely large one and I've had him years and he's doing well but I've had 4 smaller ones in the same & different tanks to the big one and they all died within a year. No idea why.
