right this may sound a stupid question, but i wont know till i ask, and it safer to ask then not know, i know if you use a filter media from a established aquarium in your own filter it helps speed thing up, im just wondering can you use filter out of a pond, i have had a pond in my gardon for about 10 years, so im just wondering if you could use that filter media, or is it not possible?

thanks

Is your tank filter for a cold water set-up?

I don't think it'll work then. I believe it's different bacteria. Also I'd be worried that the pond filter will include some pond parasites.

I'm not sure though, so perhaps someone more knowledgeable will answer soon.

i was thinking the same thing, mite contaminate the filter and water, but im not sure, im not gona do it untill can get a sure answer

I can't tell you for sure, but I'd give it a try. But I would keep the tank cold, or match the temp of the pond and raise it slowly after you put the media in.

They're the same genera, it'd be fine but you run the risk of introducing something from the pond.

It's fine to seed tropical filters from a pond one, as long as the pond is healthy. There will be bacteria that tolerate higher temperatures present, as well as ones that prefer lower. Put the media in the tank, filled with cold water, and then switch the heater on and let it come up to a tropical temp, as Colleen says, and it'll be fine.

Hi
I have done this with success
But like others say just check to make sure there's no nasties on it
I just used a few bits of media from my dads pond then took them out around 3 months later all was good
