From The Bay To The Reef

Right - I'm gonna stop messing now.

Arches and caves - I'm never gonna see my fish when they get in there!

Ok I went the Live Sand Route - Anyone go this route and get loads of bubbly murkey stuff on the surface?

Yip it will settle after a day or 2 you will most probably need to blow the sediment off your LR as well :)

Loving the scape! Looks brilliant, nice layout and good spots for corals too.

Live sand has been know to create ammonia spikes. Not really an issue as your tank is cycling anyway but something to check on anyway.

Ok then, diatoms I believe.

What does its presence indicate and do I let everything run riot or do I do something? Am I missing something?

Hi. Really love the scaping! Well done. I'm a total newbie at this but I had that exact same brown diatoms stuff on my rocks after about two weeks. I'm sure the more experienced will jump in and clarify if I'm mistaken but im sure it's normal to get it in a new setup. Personaly, I left my tank to finsh cycling and when I added cuc they took care of it. It came and went several times but was always taken care of by snails etc. I still occassionally get it on the sand some times but again it disapears after while.

Hope this helps.

in new setups you get lots of algae in the tank. but once your tank is cycled then you can buy some cuc. so your cuc will take care of that.

Yeah as above its quite normal in a new tank. It normally burns itself out and then the CUC will take care of the rest once you add them.

Can I just say this site is excellent for user comments. The speed of advice is fantastic.

Does anyone have an indication of what is considered a spike in terms of NH4, NO2 and NO3?
