I have one. It didn't bother my brown algae (when I had some) at all. I have it to kill the bad bacteria in the water as DevotedToDiscus said. You may want to cut down on the amount of hours your main tank lights are on.

I think 10 days without any signs (including flashing) is enough time.

You don't have to change cartridges until they are literally falling apart. Filter manufacturers say they need to be replaced so they can take your money.

I don't have any ethical or health concerns regarding Glofish. I almost bought some.

You could cut it up and put it in a place in your new filter that receives the most water flow.

I would not put more than 10 Tiger Barbs in a 30 gallon tank. They are very active and need room to stretch their fins. Since they can get a little chunky 10 would just about fill your tank IMO.

With fish in your tank you need to change as much water as necessary to keep ammonia as low as possible. Your fish will provide the ammonia necessary to cycle your filter. Clean your filter in tank water, not tap water. Just gently swish it to remove the large junk that would interfere with...

No offence but I don't think that's the best part of tank cleaning. Next time I'm gonna try blasting hot tap water through them. I need to find one of those here. The one I have is only about 24 inches (60cm) long.

Clean the sponges and everything in tank water and dump the brown water. The bacteria is in the sponges and other media, not the water.

How big are the two fish? Tank dimensions?

Getting some mature filter media will speed up your cycle. If you're in the U.S. it can be purchased online. Agitating the surface means creating ripples or splashes with a spraybar or powerhead. If you use a sand substrate no dirt gets under it.

There's also a Seachem Pond Prime but they both do the same things.

I agree. 77 wasn't cutting it so I lowered it to 75 today. 72 is better but it makes for a scary bill. I'm not even sure it's possible during a Texas summer. Last summer we hit 110 in the shade I believe.

A friend of mine has a tank. He has lost interest in fishkeeping and is hoping his fish will die. Yet, they live on. I do everything in my power to keep my fish alive and yet, I've lost fish. I too would love to know why some fish live and some don't.
