ChromeBook? TERRIBLE system. Cheaply made and VERY restricted as to software. I suppose they are OK if all you want to do is browse the web and email but if you want to use the thing as a productive it is pretty weak. Better off with Linux by a lot.

Being able to connect a ChromeBook to a monitor or TV is basic stuff that basically all systems offer. Shoot, I have a 10 year old Asus laptop connected to a 27 inch external monitor.

Take it or leave it but I STRONGLY advise to not go with a ChromeBook.

Colin doesnt do anything complex on his computer.. Chromebooks are fast, virus free, lightweight and auto updating very quickly. And they are inexpensive.

Chromebooks are no more infection free than Apple. Apple went for years claiming that they were immune as to viruses yet, today, it is estimated that over 50% of Apple devices are infected.

In today's world viruses as such, are no longer the biggest issue. The biggest threat today is Malware such as Ransomware and exploits. No system is immune to such threats as they are largely dependent on the system user ignoring security warnings.

I would have to ask as to what your qualifications are as to a system being 'virus free'? I back my qualifications with five awards from Microsoft.

Chomebooks dont allow downloading of programs or exe files so are far less likely to get infected. And chromebooks are easily reset to factory state if issues do arise which is far less likely than either apple or windows computers.
You can do spreadsheets and word processing with a chromebook but it's best use is for websurfing. Colin does not need any more than that.

Ahhh, but they DO allow installs. The problem here is that the allowed installs go through the Google Store which does a terrible job of policing what is available. Every day more and more warnings go up as to software offered through Google Play being infected.

As to factory reset Windows has offered this for years taking about four mouse clicks to do. Apple also allows for this but is slightly more involved but not much.

I'm not trying to get in an argument but your info is not totally accurate. You are saying what Google says which is not often accurate.

Today it will be....

Taking 6 large recycling boxes outside that are full to the brim with empty plastic bottles :)

Then it will be doing water changes on the aquariums :fish:

Which will give me (does some very swift arithmetics) erm.....36 new empty plastic bottles (plus two from the coffee machine) to wait patiently in a bag ready to start refilling the recycling boxes once emptied tomorrow morning 😇

I am so nice to my fish and to my binmen....the fish swim in glacial water without any chemicals and my binmen have a regular fortnightly collection to do 😇

The crushing of plastic water bottles is very satisfying at 0430 in the morning after being kept awake by Elvis (the bloody Bassett Hound next door) all night long.... :yahoo:

That's right! My tonight is my tomorrow and your tomorrow is my tonight!
What is in the future??

As to the systems that don't work properly you may want to consider visiting my computer help forums linked in my signature. We might be able to help you with the problem systems.
been there, done that, you couldn't help :(

what's a good 24 inch computer monitor to get, or a tv that I can plug the computer into?

I asked for a Panasonic and got a Samsung and my previous was a Dell, both fupling useless.

<quietly grumbling to myself>

Thought today was going too smoothly....just discovered that the lower plate basket/rack on my dishwasher has started to not only go rusty but lost some of the prong thingies that keep the plates in place....

I know it is 10 years old and nothing lasts forever.....but even so, it might have warned me before it started to fall apart like one of those infamous Lancia Beta's after driving through a puddle

90 quid for a new lower basket/rack assembly....... <sharp intake of breath> no choice but to get a new one cos not paying for an entire new dishwasher for the sake of one lower basket/rack assembly

Ordered it....will be here on Friday

(The top basket thingy costs over 100 quid.....old one is OK for now, no telltale signs of imminent collapse like the lower one did.......sods law tells me that I will have to get one next month cos the top one will go into collapse mode at first opportunity.....always happens....just like the times when you have appliances and they curl up and die a month after the warranty runs out....that top basket/rack will pop its clogs within the month, I would order both but the top one is out of stock currently)

Today? Oatmeal with peaches for breakfast, more singing with little kids, a meeting this afternoon that I hope won't be entirely pointless (not holding my breath), then maybe a good, hard bike ride this afternoon if the heat and forest fire smoke aren't too bad. Supposed to be a high of 60 on Friday, which will be nice.

One of my sparkling gouramis has been guarding a bubble next for a week or two, and it's right over a huge moss bed, so I'm hopeful that some fry might survive.

By the way, I use a chromebook for music mixing (with bandlab) and simple-ish video editing (with Wevideo) and it is completely adequate as long as I have a good internet connection. I've noticed that a lot of people develop very strong feelings about computer brands and operating systems, and discussing them can almost remind one of discussing religious denominations, political parties, or the dreaded Ford vs. Chevy debate, which has split families and begun multigenerational feuds here in Wyoming. Perhaps we need to edit the no-religion-or-politics rule to include DOS discussions...
