Tina's Twin Bommies

Ah but did you like the corals Big C??
You want an honest answer.........Of course I do, as a matter of fact I was going to buy a new trumpet like that a few weeks ago, to compliment the ones I already have.
Nice aquisitions there Tina.

The corals look fab....I saw the most amazing toadstool today in my lfs....to only see it being bagged up 2 mins later.....never mind! You were lucky they were still in the shop!

Bangaii always freak me out....have you seen one head on?...they look like they are wearing a hockey mask...like from silence of the lambs! Makes me cring thinking about it!

hi

i have had 4 potters angels and have had them in my reef tanks and and every 1 have tore my hard corals appart so i wouldnt put that in your tank

My word you have been busy T and a very eventfull week, sorry to hear about your fish, its never nice to lose anything, especially one that was so beautiful. :rip:

Your tank is looking amazing you certainly have an eye for the corals
I love the aquascaping, I'm am looking to do something similar with mine :good:

Thanks Trod, it has certainly been eventful.

The biggest event was actually finding out I had Osteoarthritis of the spine, no one actually told me, it was on my doctors note I collected from the doctors!!

Spoke to the physio about it, after I saw that, I do think someone should have actually told me.

Glidergirl, I have seen Bangaii's head on, they did look different but I thought they were wearing sunglasses, not a hocky mask

Scott, the potters may be off the list then, as beautiful as it is, my corals are too precious for that.

Trod, the 2 bommie look in your 5ft tank would look absolutley stunning, you would be able to make them bigger than I have as my tank is only 15" deep, I am sure yours is much deeper than that.

Big C, why did you not by the Trumpet, did you get something else instead, you should see it today, there are even more tentacles, looks amazing. Also have you started Ultiphos P yet, have you had any problems, I am considering trying it again now that the Pachyclavularia has settled in.

I do have an eye for corals, ones that I just know (usually) are going to be expensive. I am thinking about getting the Elegance for my birthday at the end of August. I think by then I should have phosphates under control and the sump should be nice and mature. I will see if I can get one of the purple tipped ones, they look stunning. Hopefully then someone else will buy me the torch and I will have a full complement of Euphyllia family. I am considering getting the Duncan soon now, we will see.

A few pictures for you again.

Really settled well now, after ordering some more chaetomorpha, I think I got some pods with it and obviously got life with the new rocks, he has been picking at stuff on the rocks all day.

I am still waiting for my eheim pump and brine shrimp hatcher to be delivered, should come soon.

I am also expecting a delivery tomorrow, will enlighten you when that arrives.

I got my delivery this morning. I had ordered another 10 turbos. I now have about 15. Much more realistic number for a 40 gallon tank.

I also managed to get a small frag of Duncan, so I got it after all, although not multi heads, just the one.

I also got my banded serpent star, he headed straight underneath a rock on the sand bed, I suppose he will come out later after feeding time.

I also took a load of photos of everything else.

Pearl Bubble

2009_0527Reef0003a.jpg

I did try to photograph my poorly bubble but could not get a decent one. More and more polyps are trying to expand so I am being optimistic that it will pull through.

I have added a double dose of phosphate remover, cut down the lighting period and am cutting down on feeding as I still have a problem with red slime algae. It does not seem to be flow as it will grow where there is very good flow, I am wondering if it is the water at all. Unfortunately do not have a TDS meter. I have been sticking to my once weekly waterchanges as I have done all along. I have a tonne of chaeto in the sump and levels are 0. I know nitrate and phosphate is probably 0 due to the algae consuming it but I do not seem to have done anything different. This is why I am wondering if it is the water. I am going elsewhere to get some tommorrow so we will see if it makes a difference. I am manually removing it at the moment but am a little worried what I will come back to after my holiday. I am hoping it may be down to an imbalance in the CUC, just not having enough, but probably not.

Funny you should ask that Tina. I tried a first batch over the weekend and the readings are very encouraging 0.008 with the D&D kit. I asked around and was told that that reading is as good as it gets. So I'm chuffed with the Ultiphos (club bulk buy) in regards to being up to the job required. I will now have to see how long it takes for phosphates to rise and judge when It needs out changing. Then I will get a true picture of how cost effective the product is running in my system.
For now I'm pleased with it

Because I am having a little cyano problem which I am still not sure whether it is phosphate leaching from substrate and rocks from the time I was without remover, or whether there is another problem now, I decided to bung a double dose of the Ultiphos P in when changing out rowaphos (not got enough rowa). I have not had the same problems with it this time, the pachyclavularia has continued to open its polyps.

I am wondering if it was having the Ultiphos in an internal filter rather than in a bubble stop in the sump as it is now. I am wondering if it being in the water very close to the pachy had an adverse affect. If I continue to get the same results, I will be swapping back to the Ultiphos. It is a hell of a lot cheaper then than the rowaphos which makes a huge difference now I have the larger tank.

Am I right in thinking that if I had high phosphates in the time I did not have phophate remover in the tank, that the phosphate would be adsorbed by the LR and substrate and could now be being released. I had the same problem with cyano just before swapping the tank over. It would have had a massive water change when swapping tanks with the amount of water extra needed to fill the tank.

Sorry if I have rambled a bit, trying to get to the bottom of my cyano.

wow nice pics tina. Coming along very nicely. Id remove some of the ride slime by hand too, that was one thing that helped me see the back of it.
What X turnover do you have?

At the moment it is 18 x plus the return from the sump. That is spread over 3 powerheads. Could probably do with some more but I don't think it is low enough to cause the problem.

I have been getting it by hand and making sure I blow the rock off, then stirring the substrate slightly (not madly) with a chopstick. I am hoping it is just a phase and it will go soon.

what sort of lighting period are you currently using?

cutting back on the lighting will limit the growth of the algae and give your CUC a chance to get on top of it.

when i had cyano in the nano, it didn't seem to matter what i did, i just couldn't get rid of it. eventually the tank 'matured' enough for it to sort itself out.
however i beleive increasing phosphate remover, increasing flow, and cutting back on the lighting will all help.

obviously you have to be careful with the flow because of the corals you have.
