Finally got round to replacing the seals yesterday & woke in the early hours to running water, the #### thing was leaking more than ever, the washing up bowl had overflowed all over the lounge floor again :shout: So cleaned up water & disconnected the Eheim, the bu**er won't leak again...

With my leaky Eheim, I have placed in a washing up bowl and have lubricated the seals the impellor seal does look perished so I ordered a new set from ebay which have now arrived. Lubricating the seals has slowed the leak but not cured it, so will fit new seals asap. Just dealing with another...

Mmm, that doesn't sound too promising I would think it is more likely the seal around the impellor as the water is getting into the corners as was yours. Only problem is finding somewhere with one in stock ASAP. :S Not too impressed with Eheim I thought they were high quality products but...

IMHO you cannot over filter but you can have too much water flow depending on stock. I have a Fluval 305 on a 90 litre running at full whack, but then I have 10 Juvie Tropheus in there and they can be rather messy especially with lettuce.

Yes it is superb value, wish I had known years ago it would of saved me a small fortune but at least I won't be caught out again this is the only substrate I will be using from now on.

Play sand from Argos is currently £2.99 for a 15kg bag, just got some last week. Just give it a quick swill in a bucket to get rid of any bits, not that there was any in mine.

Externals especially the Fluvals are very easy & cheap to maintain. They come with all necessary media and the only media that needs changing regulary if you choose to use it (many don't) is the carbon, you could just add some more bio media and/or use filter wool which is dirt cheap on ebay (5...

As already said bleach but need to be the no frills plain bleach nothing added like scent etc. then soak in a solution of water & dechlorinator after.

If its an external it will more than likely settle down in a day or two. As said probably trapped air.

Yes Multi's do enjoy good water flow. I have 2 external filters in my 240 L which creates quite a lot of movement but this never seems to bother them, even the fry seem to cope OK.

I have a problem with some of my Tropheus, some have large white spots almost the size of a match head and they stick out from the fishes bodies. The fish otherwise seem fine and are eating well. All water parameters are fine Nitrite = 0 Ammonia =0 Nitrate <10 PH 7.8 I do a 20% water change...

I would think that would be fine for 3-4 Mulit's but I would get more so you can make several clusters of shells so they can choose where they want to be, or you can go for the natural look and get enough to cover the whole tank bottom to a depth of 2-3 shells high. have you visited...

Yes you are right the Gold shellies can only be kept in a pair or group of three (2 females & 1 male I believe), so rethink time on this one, may setup a tank just for Multies. Anyway I have some good news my Multies have spawned and I have babies, so I am a proud daddy :hyper:

My setup is a mixed Tanganyikan community not just shell dwellers. I have a 240 litre tank with coral gravel (fine) substrate & 75kg of ocean rock and many empty snail shells. The tank is currently filtered by a Fluval 305 external filter with carbon removed & replaced with Seachem Matrix bio...

What size tank have you got? Your Tropheus will need a varied vegetarian diet consisting of Spirulina flakes, NLS Cichlid pellets, Romaine lettuce, peas etc. Good luck :)
