ive got some brand new filters and there so ***** noisy! its the sound of the erm...whats it called? the bit that propells the water through it...lol yes that bit! well thats what it sounds like but either way, is there a way i can prevent it at all? i just want it to hurry up and get used to NOT being so noisy

p.s - i have the filter already so know its not noisy, its just when there new they are lol

impellor :good:

they shouldnt be noisy if they are new.... does it have any trapped air inside?

Agreed. The impellor on one of mine is quite noisy, making a grating sound, and it's brand new. Seems they're like that a lot these days.

hm im not sure, but i have 2 and both of them are really noisy, never had trouble with air? how on earth would i remove it lol

Internal or external? try looking at the impellor, usually you can just pull them out, just check all is good, then make sure filters full and fully submerged if internal,if external ensure the waters brimming, and if noise carrys on, just try tilting filter and see what happens, hold it at a 25-30% angle...might be trapped air, mind you some filters are actually quite noisey

hm ok i will try this now! hopfull it will work :( i always exspect it but not this bad! its internal by the way

Almost certainly trapped air. Rotate the whole filter whilst still submerged, and see if any large pockets of air appear.

I tend to re-construct internal filters fully under the water, usually helps keep air pockets to a minimum :)

thanks! but....alhough there was air in the filter i still cant shut it up...if the filter is not attached to the glass it does not make a sound, yet attach it to the glass....and OMG it makes a racket! ive never had this before, pretty stuck :( any ideas?

""edit""

well i just swapped the impeller with my one that is quite....and now they are both quite! so im pretty sure it has something to do with the goo that is all over the old impeller? this is not on the new one, anyone got any ideas what this "greese" is?

it will be just muck and dirt thats stuck to the impellor it should just wipe off. whenever doing maintenance on the filter just remove it and clean it off it will save a lot of hassle :good:

lol if i do that the filter becomes very noisy...i think i will keep it there

If its an external it will more than likely settle down in a day or two. As said probably trapped air.

its an internal, it does not make any noise when attached to the glass, its the impeller thats making noise,
