I would start looking at larger volume water changes too. Think in terms of percentages. Any thing over 0.5 mg/l would make me want to do at least a 50% change.

I would ask to swap a matured one with your raw one, it would be a god send. Keep checking the levels and changing water as needed though.

It's ammonia and nitrItes you should worry about. Nitrates are only toxic in high amounts. Keep doing water changes every time you ammonia or nitrite goes beyong 0.25ppm. Can you get the mature media into your filter, it might just help it spread a bit better and survives better from the water...

If it is kept damp it might last 24 hours. If you need ammonia I think boots do household ammonia, it might be worth ringing the LFS and asking them for some filter media to seed your filter, it might just give it a bigger kick in the right direction.

If you are moving the fish across, just move them across with the filter, remember that you cycle the filter not the tank. If not then you need to keep adding a source of ammonia until the cycle is complete. if the media is fairly mature then it shouldn't take too long.
