Hypocrisy?

However, it isn't hypocrisy, because what belief or behavior are they opposing while in actuality believing in it (the definition of hypocrisy)? A good example of hypocrisy would be member of a strict religious group that forbids alcohol, and while in public the person makes a big show turning down offered drinks or calling for prohibition in the name of his religious beliefs, but when he gets home alone he enjoys or maybe even is addicted to alcohol.

Pets at Home seems to have very irrational or illogical policies, but they aren't hypocrisies.

You know, as mentioned earlier sending an e-mail, I think sending letters would work much better...How about letter sending?

I disagree, they say that they won't sell more than a certain number of fish as they believe that by doing so the filter will not be able to support them, and yet they promote the sale of fish to tanks with uncycled filters knowing they won't be able to support the fish. Therefore making a big show of 'being responsible'.

I have no problem with them enforcing this rule but there are too many variables. He didn't say I couldn't buy 15 messy tank busting fish but he did say I couldn't buy 16 neons. I also could have been lying about my tank being mature in order to buy more fish. I am sure he had a grasp of cycling as he advised his customer that adding mature media to their filter would kickstart the bacteria cycle.

I understand what you mean though, although isn't it just symantics?

^ our petsmart( American Pets@home, well, i tihnk thier owned by the same people) give out phamplets. But the lady told someone to put a bala in the 10 g tank but let the water sit a day. And she gave her a thing abotu "cycling". I have noticed something though. Petsmarts labels for their fish give info, which is off. They say a Pleco can live in a 20g tank! Others are quite absurd as well. It makes me sick. When i turn 16 i'll apply there just to straiten them up( even though i'd rather go to my fav lfs, but they are great and our petsmart is TERRIBLE!)

Don't count on being able to straighten them out- from what I've heard, if you give advice other than exactly what they tell you to tell people, you will be fired. Work for the LFS instead. I work for a good LFS and I love it!

I'm gonna stick up for this guy at P@H - I used to work there  a few years ago part time job while at uni. At the time i had no knowledge of fish keeping - my interest was rats and gerbils etc.

I now know a lot more about fish keeping and think back to the advice that I "knew" to be correct and it makes me cringe... They do indeed have a policy on how many fish can be sold, the store I worked in then it was no more than 3 fish per customer per day, and no fish to be sold to customers on the same day as the tanks.

When selling fish we were told to ask how big the tank was and how long it had been running for, but not whether it had been cycled or not. In fact the leaflets (which were given out as policy on the sale of any livestock) I don't think had any info on cycling either.

Anyway my point is I don't think you can blame the guy. Most people that work there are probably part timers and it's not their fault if they have been given poor training and wrong information. Bear in mind there is a lot to learn about all the livesock there, (don't forget they also sell rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, rats, chipmunks, chinchillas, canaries, parrots, minah birds, love birds, finches, rosettas as well as products for these and cats, dogs, ferrets, horses etc.) and most of the stuff you have to know about is more to do with the products they sell, keeping the shop stocked up and tidy, and using the till, less to do with the selling of livestock.

However the company is at fault for letting their staff sell livestock (fish + others) when they do not have a good knowledge of the care required for the animals.

don't blame the guy, blame the company!

Personally I wouldn't buy any form of livestock from there, fish or otherwise, after seeing how many animals don't even make it to the shop floor after delivery... but that's another story!
