How Much Noise Does Your Canister Filter Make?

Mine just makes a gentle hum, not sure if there is such a thing as a completely silent filter. Mine tends to get more noisy when it needs cleaning. Billy the Fish

My Rio 240 Is Arriving Today

Sorry to here about your tale of woe, but nobody can do anything about filters breaking down. Sounds like you did all you could to keep losss down to a minimum. Anyway, chin up and good luck with the new tank. I really like the Rio 240 and would like one myself for my new tank. Just got to get...

    Not A Happy Platty

Mine is eating and does not seem to be resting on anything, haven't noticed her breathing to be laboured either, nor is she bloated. Water stats: Ammonia 0 PH 7.2 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 20 The tank has been set up for 4 months and was cycled with the same 4 platys. Thanks Billy the Fish

    Not A Happy Platty

Mine has been like this for a couple of weeks because she was hiding under the bogwood until I took it out. I've just fed them and she was out looking for food and eating with the rest. Hopefully its nothing to worry about and yours will be ok as well. Billy the Fish :)

    Not A Happy Platty

Hi, I have read this post with interest as I have a female platy exhibiting the same behaviour. I had a piece of bogwood in the tank which she used to hide under all the time which has now been removed. She now hides in the plants and when she does come out swims in the manner you have...

    Alternative Foods

Thanks for the replies, I think I'll give the peas another go but make them mushier and perhaps the brine shrimp as they already like the Daphnia. Bill the Fish :D

    Alternative Foods

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone could suggest some alternative foods to to feed as well as flake. I already feed frozen daphnia once or twice a week, and have tried cooked peas which didn't seem to go down too well! Not sure I cooked them long enough though? I have 4 red wagtail...

    New Tank!

Do you mean a polystyrene layer to stop the glass cracking? I would have thought the tank would have something build in to prevent damage to the glass. My tank has a base which does this and you can place it on any cabinet/unit you want. Billy the Fish :)

Nice fish :) Is that a lemon tetra? One of mine jumped out of my tank the other day, but has lived to fight another day! Billy the Fish :)

    Test Kits

I use the aquarium pharmacuticals kit as well and find it easy enough to use. It tests Ammonia, PH, High range PH, Nitrate, & Nitrite. Afterwards I just wash my tubes out with tap water and dry them so there is no chance of the results being affected when I use them again. Some of the colour...

How Can I Tell If My New Fish Is Pregnant? Im Still Learning.

Not sure about guppies, but check out the live bearers section on here though, there's loads of info about raising fry etc. Billy the Fish :)

How Can I Tell If My New Fish Is Pregnant? Im Still Learning.

From what I can gather there is a good chance that some of the fry will get eaten. However, if you have plenty of plants it will provide places for the fry to hide to give them a better chance. The book I have in front of me says that the mother may retire to a quiet place near the surface in...

How Can I Tell If My New Fish Is Pregnant? Im Still Learning.

I also have platys (4 red wagtail platys 2m 2f). This is what I have read about them and breeding as I believe one or both of my females may be preggie! The females are more rounded and are usually larger than the males. When pregnant they become more rounded in shape and fatter, and when...

    Jumping Lemon Tetra!

Thanks Wilder, It was only out about a minute, so I hope he will be ok. Seems to be swimming ok and quickly found his mates again. Am i right in thinking that his tail will heal?

    Jumping Lemon Tetra!

Just a few words of warning... I was doing a water change tonight and had the tank lid off. Next thing I heard a splash and realised one of my lemon tetras had jumped out and gone down the back of the tank and cabinet. My girlfriend retrieved it and put it back in the tank, I assumed it would...

    Cycling A Tank....

I cycled my tank with 4 red wagtailed platys, and added 5 lemon tetras when the tank had cycled. The platys were reccomended as being good hardy fish for cycling a tank and this has proved to be the case. Get yourself a good liquid testing kit and keep on top of the water stats. I tested the...

    Aquarium Light

I think it depends on whether you have live plants. I do and mine is on 10 hours a day and I don't have algae problems, although I have taken care to keep the tank out of direct sunlight. If you don't have live plants you won't need it on for all that time during the day as it is only really...

    Reliable Heater

Hi Debra, I have an Eheim heater in my 15 gallon tank which I have found to be very reliable, keeping the tank a nice constant temperature. I understand they are a highly respectable manufacturer so you should be able to get one in the USA. Billy the Fish :)

    New To Tropical Fishkeeping

Hi, and welcome to the forums. Looks like you and I have the same size tank, never hear of your 'teabag' contraption though! I cycled my tank with 4 platys which have been fine, I got myself a liquid testing kit so I could keep on top of the water quality which helped. Good luck with your...

    Plants

I have Elodea Densa in my tank and it really does grow very quickly. I just keep trimming the ends off to keep it under control and so it gets bushier lower down the stem. Billy the Fish :)

    Filter Cleaning

Hi all, I have an internal Eheim sponge filter in my tank which is cycled and has been up and running for about 6 weeks. I wondered if I should think about cleaning the filter or whether it is too early? I'm worried that I might kill off the bacteria in the sponge as it hasn't been...

    Starting Off A New Tank

Hi Sally2, I cycled my tank with 4 red wagtailed platys and would definitely reccomend them. They are still all happily swimming around 1 month on and have been joined by 5 lemon tetras. They are fun to watch and are very lively. I just kept an eye on the water readings and did regular changes...

    Scared To Stock The Tank....

Hi Big Ian, I was as nervous as you thought all my fish would go belly up! Pleased to report I started off with 4 platties in my tank 1 month ago and they are all still happily swimming about, and have been joined by 5 lemon tetras. Depends on whether you want platties, but mine certainly seem...

    Stocking A 15 Gal

Really, am I fully stocked already? I was hoping to add 2 or 3 more fish, wishing I'd got a bigger tank already! I would really like to add some pygmy corries though, as my tetras and platties all seem to swim mid-tank. I have got quite a few plants and a quite large piece of bogwood so I...

    Substrate Question

Hi I'm pretty new too but this is what I've done, I have planted my plants in pea gravel (2"-3" deep) with no special substrate. I've used tetraplant crypto root tablets and no liquid fertilser. I always remove the foam and the lead bands so I can trim off any dead roots and allow them to...

    Stocking A 15 Gal

Hi everyone, I have a 15 gal, 24" X 12" X 12" currently stocked with 4 wagtail platties & 5 lemon tetras. The tank has been running for 6 weeks with the fish in for 1 month. All seems ok with water readings stable - PH - 7.4, Ammonia 0, Nitrate, 10, Nitrite 0. I am hoping to add some more...

    Stocking Via-aqua

I have 5 lemon tetras in my 15 gal tank together with 4 red wagtail platties. They all get on fine, with the lemon tetras turning into little piranhas come feeding time! I was considering neons but the lemons are slightly larger and I believe are hardier for a newish tank. I'm thinking of...

    Platies!

I would have thought that would be okay. In such a small group the lone female shouldn't be bothered too much by the other 2 male fish. I read somewhere that if a female is heavily outnumbered by males she might be stressed out by the frisky males bothering her all the time, and it best to...

Few Questions On A Community Tank?

I have a single Arcadia original tropical lamp lighting my tank. I have found my plants are growing quite well although my tank in only 15 gal and is shallow enough for it to provide sufficient light. I have also tried to put plants in where the light doesn't have to be very bright for them to...

    Cycling With Fish And Plants.

Hi, I'm new and cycled my tank from day 1 with fish and plants as I understand it helps the process and keeps algae at bay as the plants compete with the algae for nutrients. I looked on the forums for plants which were easy to grow as a beginner without much light. I have a 15 gall tank with...
