Hi

I have posted similar in another section but have been advised to post here.

1 of my female plattys just hides on a ledge in the background, fins clamped to her body & tail not fanned out. On the rare ocassion she does come out she swims around using just her unfanned tail. She doesn't appear to be ill but will return to the ledge ASAP, not moving more than 2 or 3 mm all day. My male swordtail did a lot of bullying so I have moved him to a breeding tank in the main tank. It's since doing this that the platty started acting as above.

Any ideas as to what is wrong with her?

Hi,

I have read this post with interest as I have a female platy exhibiting the same behaviour.

I had a piece of bogwood in the tank which she used to hide under all the time which has now been removed. She now hides in the plants and when she does come out swims in the manner you have described.

I have 4 platys in all (2m & 2F) and there has been no sign of bullying, and she does not appear to be expecting.

She is still eating and appears healthy, as do my other fish and water quality is fine.

Has yours acted like this for long?

My didn't start until a day or 2 AFTER bullying stopped (2 gurami & 1 swordtail moved to breeding tanks). I don't have a male the same size & colour but there is one small male (electric blue) in the tank. She is one of 2 orange female plattys, one of which was pregnant when I got them but didn't realise until I found 4 babies which are now in the main tank again & doing well.
Prehaps there's nothing wrong. Will have to wait & find out.

PS my water quality is fine, a number of deaths were, it appears, due to bullying.

Mine has been like this for a couple of weeks because she was hiding under the bogwood until I took it out.

I've just fed them and she was out looking for food and eating with the rest. Hopefully its nothing to worry about and yours will be ok as well.

With her clamping her fins which is stress we would like to take at look at your stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
If a fish has been stressed for a while it can make them ill, does she rest on things in the tank, does she look bloated, any laboured breathing, is she eating.

Mine is eating and does not seem to be resting on anything, haven't noticed her breathing to be laboured either, nor is she bloated.

Water stats:

Ammonia 0

PH 7.2

Nitrite 0

Nitrate 20

The tank has been set up for 4 months and was cycled with the same 4 platys.

Thanks

Billy the Fish

Everything looks good in water stats, sadly sometimes they get through the cycle then they die, as the cycle was just to much for them, just keep a close eye on her, good luck.
