Mine floats with a couple of air pockets, so I don't have this problem. Why not equalise the water change so that you can put the fry back in sooner? How much heat does the bucket lose before you can put the fry back?

Does anyone use the old style air pump powered filters any more? Would that be sufficient for a Betta and shrimp?

Not done unless the flow begins to drop. So about twice a year. The bacteria breaking down the ammonia/nitrite is all that matters really.

It's not a good idea to put a metal spoon in your tank! :crazy:

It's probably harmless tho. Your fish might even prefer it. A few decent water changes should start to clear it.

I leave it on. AshleyT - did you Blanch the slices first? Either boil them or put them in the microwave for a bit. This should also sink them.

I'll also remove the rock & decorations. They are probably fine but just in case remove them until you've sorted the problems out.

Don't just rely on algae to feed them. Unless your sure it's getting some of the fish food, I would add food that's more targeted to the snail. I didn't used to realise they need their own food & lost 4 small ones pretty quickly. I now have a large one, probably 3-4 cm and I drop in a slice of...

You just need enough to be able to root the plants you keep. Don't forget the more sand you have, the less water you have and I'm guessing that's why you upgraded in the first place.

Yes, it's even more important then the adults to have the tank heated & filtered properly, but if they are in a breeding trap then it's not really a worry. If a separate tank, then the filter should be a low powered one and not capable of sucking the fry up into them.

Yes, pregnant. A big black Gravid spot showing there. Ideally they are best kept in a separate tank, if not, a floating breeding trap is another option. Just keep them separate from the adult fish that will eat them and feed them some fry food that will be available from your LFS. Or crush up...

The plumpness in the photo looks more like a well fed fish rather then a pregnant one. There's no gravid spot. But as per Cazgar, she will be pregnant if she's been near a male Swordtail, as livebearers are constantly pregnant. Watch her from above, that's the easiest way to see how far gone...

As above, I would say it has to be an over-feeding issue. How often do you feed? Once a day, 6 times a week is usually sufficient for fish. Not sure if it's just a shrimp tank, but I would guess even less feeds for a shrimp only tank. Can anyone verify?

I've a 6" Plec for over 6 months now and it always hides if it knows I'm nearby. Is this normal? Aside from removing the slate it hides behind, is there any way to stop this behaviour? btw Tempting him out with food doesn't work.

I've also heard it's a bad idea. The Betta might think it's competition and kill the guppies. Are your guppies highly coloured with large finnage?
