    Apple Snail - Shell Problem

My Apple snail has a problem on his shell at the top of the spiral. You can see his flesh underneath it, so I'm not even sure the shell is still there. See the photo below, sorry about the size, you have to scroll right to see it. How can I do about it? I've had him over 2 years and he was...

Doing A Water Change With Fry In Net Breeders

Mine floats with a couple of air pockets, so I don't have this problem. Why not equalise the water change so that you can put the fry back in sooner? How much heat does the bucket lose before you can put the fry back?

What Made You Decide To Set Up An Aquarium?

I had fish as a kid and it lasted 10 years, then 1 time I moved house and never moved the tank with it. So I didn't have any fish for over 10 years and had no plans to re-start the hobby. Then the hotukdeals site showed that Aldi had a complete set-up for £40 and I couldn't resist. 5 more tanks...

    Filters

Not done unless the flow begins to drop. So about twice a year. The bacteria breaking down the ammonia/nitrite is all that matters really.

    Cucumber

It's not a good idea to put a metal spoon in your tank!
  16. zuulan

    Annoyed.

It's probably harmless tho. Your fish might even prefer it. A few decent water changes should start to clear it.

    Cucumber

I leave it on. AshleyT - did you Blanch the slices first? Either boil them or put them in the microwave for a bit. This should also sink them.

I'll also remove the rock & decorations. They are probably fine but just in case remove them until you've sorted the problems out.

    Apple Snails

Don't just rely on algae to feed them. Unless your sure it's getting some of the fish food, I would add food that's more targeted to the snail. I didn't used to realise they need their own food & lost 4 small ones pretty quickly. I now have a large one, probably 3-4 cm and I drop in a slice of...

How Deep Should My Sand Be?

You just need enough to be able to root the plants you keep. Don't forget the more sand you have, the less water you have and I'm guessing that's why you upgraded in the first place.

    Pregnant Swardfish?

Yes, it's even more important then the adults to have the tank heated & filtered properly, but if they are in a breeding trap then it's not really a worry. If a separate tank, then the filter should be a low powered one and not capable of sucking the fry up into them.
  27. zuulan

    Pregnant Swardfish?

Yes, pregnant. A big black Gravid spot showing there. Ideally they are best kept in a separate tank, if not, a floating breeding trap is another option. Just keep them separate from the adult fish that will eat them and feed them some fry food that will be available from your LFS. Or crush up...

    Pregnant Swardfish?

The plumpness in the photo looks more like a well fed fish rather then a pregnant one. There's no gravid spot. But as per Cazgar, she will be pregnant if she's been near a male Swordtail, as livebearers are constantly pregnant. Watch her from above, that's the easiest way to see how far gone...

    Fish Tank Oil Slick

I had the same problem after setting up a tank a few years back. I'd recommend he skims the surface by dropping in a glass/cup straight in vertically so that only surface water drops into the glass. Will take awhile to do each water change but it will eventually get rid of the oil slick, which...

    Gravel Question

I've the same problem with a tank with white sand in it. It looks amazing when you first set the tank up, but it soon looks pretty bad. I've resisted doing a change so far and might just gradually add normal coloured sand in. Can anyone tell me if my open bag of sand that's been kept in the...

    Pest Snail Issue

As above, I would say it has to be an over-feeding issue. How often do you feed? Once a day, 6 times a week is usually sufficient for fish. Not sure if it's just a shrimp tank, but I would guess even less feeds for a shrimp only tank. Can anyone verify?

OK, thanks for your replies. I'll just leave him be. I'm afraid I don't know what type he is, I got him/her off 'fishprotector' another member on here. If he's reading maybe he can answer.

    Shy Plec

I've a 6" Plec for over 6 months now and it always hides if it knows I'm nearby. Is this normal? Aside from removing the slate it hides behind, is there any way to stop this behaviour? btw Tempting him out with food doesn't work.
