    What Causes Green Spot Algae

GSA has been linked to low PO4. I don't get it in my tanks with Anubias. I'm lucky in that my tap has >5ppm PO4, and I add more via Tropica+ liquid. As with any algae, the best prevention is heavy planting with an appropriate level of nutrients and light. Good circulation is also a key to...

    What Causes Green Spot Algae

Are you sure? Where did you hear that? I don't have 40ppm+ CO2 and I don't have GSA. I recommend that no one reaches over 30ppm CO2.

    Black Neons From Pfk Feature

Thanks, everyone. Not 'special lighting', but there's a lot of it - 4 x 24w HO T5 over 60 litres (6 watts per gal.) I took about half a dozen shots in the same area but this was the best all rounder in terms of fish position and composition with the plants and wood. As I get more experienced...

    Black Neons From Pfk Feature

PFK magazine readers may recognise these from the latest issue (May '08) in my 'In Pursuit of Perfection' step-by-step planted tank feature. The tank is doing very well and the aquascape is maturing nicely. Look out for a full tank shot in a forthcoming issue...

    Ukaps Visit The Green Machine

Saturday 5th April 2008 saw the most successful UKAPS meet yet, hosted by The Green Machine. A wholehearted thanks to all involved - Jim and Mark for the warm reception and wonderful hospitality throughout the day, Andy and Elaine for their inspirational talk and biotope aquascape display...

I like small fish. I also prefer to see lots of small fish in big tanks, in shoals of one or two species. For me big fish generally look too small for their environment in regular aquaria. I guess it's down to taste. One day I will set up a big tank for discus, wild scalare or altums...

    Nature Aquarium Photos

Here are some shots from my 80cm (125 litre) planted aquarium. It’s a modified Juwel Rio 125 with 4 x T5 lighting, big external filter, CO2 injection, daily ferts and nutrient-rich substrate. It has glassware for the filter inlet/outlet and external inline heater to hide ugly equipment...

    Nature Aquarium

Well, it's not as hard as it may appear. First you need the right gear - plenty of light, CO2, nutrients, good substrate, good filter. Then lots of nice appropriate plants and decor (wood or rocks). You put them in the right places, watch them grow, prune them. Choosing the plants/decor and...

When, What And How Often With Ferts?

It all depends on your aquarium. What size, light, CO2, substrate, plants etc. More plants, light and CO2 = more ferts, more regularly. Unless you are heavily planted then dosing off-the-shelf according to the instructions is plenty. In fact, not being heavily planted is a recipe for algae...

Thanks all. The tank itself is 5 years old. The aquascape about 3 months from scratch. The camera is a Canon EOS 10D. It's 'old' now, with only 6.3MP, but they're good MP... I paid 200GBP with a load of gear, second hand from my uncle. It was a good deal. The 400D is a nice entry level...

I have used Tropica ferts for the last 2 years or so, almost exclusively. I've tried other ferts but this is the best IME. It contains potassium also.

    T5 Question

HO T5 is different to regular T5. Most aquarium T5s are HO these days. There's also Power Compact (PC) or Compact Fluorescent (CL), that's basically HO T5 doubled over in a U-shape. Nice tanks in your sig BTW. I notice there's a few very good Polish aquascapers out there.

Pogostemon helferi is a great candidate. Easy too. Some Anubias 'petite' tied to small rocks would work. Another option is Crypt parva - very slow growth.

    Best Way To Remove Phosphate

BGA is likely caused by poor circulation and/or substrate maintenance. Low NO3 can be a trigger also. High PO4 isn't an issue in a well-planted tank. My tap has 5+ppm PO4 and I add more PO4 every day...
