I don't really mind it being there as long as it doesn't come off in bits all over the tank

if litle bits are falling off it when it is dry then rub the loose stuff off. It is feels firm then leave it be. If it does start to break up then you can remove it and get rid of the little bits.

I've left the bark on Sumatra wood in the past with no issues.
