This Is What You Made Me Do!

At least now you have extra motivation (and excuse) for a big tank. Nice picture also, very clear.

    Balloon Rams

Gotta agree with Merguro, haven't seen anything mentioned about long fins or bright colours. Though I see where you are coming from ~T~. I personally prefer a fish to be natural, its just my preference. I accept that tastes vary and some people will ofcourse like different aspects of a fish...

    Filter For Snakehead

What size tank / internal filter / snakeheads do you have? In my previous fishkeeping experience and what I have read/learned I would say 99% of information says a filter is pretty much essentail...however, that is until I saw the recent PFK article specifically on ceylon snakeheads...

    Water Safe For Plants?

Agreed I wouldn't risk it on things for direct consumption, might be OK but not worth the risk. There was a thread on here, or another fish forum, where someone's dog had drank tank water I think and it caused them to be quite ill.

Have You Been Bitten By Your Fish?

Handfeeding my ornate polypterus an earthworm, still got the mark on my knuckle. My brother got bit by my old oscar when I also asked it a worm, drew blood, not massive but he jumped quite abit.

    Severums Firemouth Convicts?

Yeah, I saw you edited it, but I had already posted. So to summarise, and draw and end to this hopefully :P, there's no way either tank holds 360 litres. 260 litres maximum.

    Severums Firemouth Convicts?

That is one of the tanks we're talking about (that and the Juwel 260), puting them dimensions a calculator gives 365 because the advertisement states the tanks maximum width, at 18" but the tank is not 18" wide all the way along, which is what I've been trying to explain. The tank is bow...

    Severums Firemouth Convicts?

My point exactly, both juwel and fluval state maximum capasity as 260 litres. Glenboi1981 is either has a different tank than a cicenza 260 or is mistaken with measurements. I hope that they haven't stocked their tank in the belief they have an extra 120 litres of water.

    Dwarf Pike For 21G

The most commonly available dwarf pike would be the compressiceps, unfortunately they are also the most aggressive. Your best hope would be to buy 6 juveniles and grow them on together, hopefully being able to remove the extra's when a pair form in time to save bloodshed, though this wont be...

    Severums Firemouth Convicts?

I'm just trying to point out that you're forgetting the tank is curved at the front, 121x46x64 does give a capasity of 360 litres BUT the tank isn't a rectangle. I'm desperate to prove otherwise because im trying to explain that due to the unusual shape of the tank, the dimensions specified are...

    Dwarf Pike For 21G

Don't be too down, thats still a tank that could house a dwarf pike if you really like them that much. The main issue being sourcing them like I said.

    Severums Firemouth Convicts?

Of course they are, but surely, surely if the tank held 380 litres wouldn't they advertise it as that?! I don't see what you are confusing, please post or pm me. Grrrr, please I'm not flaming or arguing, sorry if it comes across as that and appologies to anyone else reading this thread but I'm...

    Severums Firemouth Convicts?

I don't understand what the confusion is here. I get that its around tank size, but are you actually trying to say the juwel vision 260 holds more than 260 litres? I understand you said you had a Vicenza 260 which you said is similar dimensions to the Juwel, Fluval's official publication...
  16. shroob

    Severums Firemouth Convicts?

2 alterations need to be taken into consideration, the juwel is 24" high and more importantly, not uniformly 18" wide. By this I mean that the tank is bow fronted (obviously) while it may be 18" at its widest, it is barely over 12" at the extremities, which mean your calculations are wrong...

    Severums Firemouth Convicts?

Whaaaaaaaa? Abit of confusion here I think. The vision 260, unsurprisingly, holds 260 litres (probably less due to filter). Surely if a tank held 380 litres, they would call it the Juwel Vision 380 :P. The Fluval Vicena holds 260 litres, (venezia 190 litres). The confusion may arrise due to...

    Severums Firemouth Convicts?

It the fish are all juvenile it will work. Though I would question your stocking in the long run. Having a vision 260 myself I would advise against severums, these are stocky fish when adult and I don't think the tank provides enough turning room at the edges of the tank. I wouldn't have a...

    I Need Physically Restraining!

Ha ha, I'm sure theres a lot of people who have come away from a fish shop feeling exactly like you, I know I have. With me it was some juvi P. motoro, the plan being I would grow them on for them. Its always a drag walking away from the tank, sort of like magnetism. If you like the fish...

    Dwarf Pike For 21G

What dimensions is the 21 gallon? The most commonly available are C. compressiceps. They are unfortunately the most aggressive dwarf pike I believe, and you may end up with just a single specimin, even if a pair forms its not uncommon for one to kill the other. In a 21 gallon tank I would...

    Killer Festive Cichlid?

I don't mean to sound aggressive/insultive but if you did research you should have expected the festivums to try and eat the neons. You should have questioned discus with fish such as ablino sharks/fighting fish.

    Balloon Rams

Balloon rams are deformed normal rams, not a hybrid. They are just like regular rams, but have a bent spine. I personally don't like them and wouldn't describe them as cute, but thats just my opinion :P.
  23. shroob

    Killer Festive Cichlid?

I wouldn't blame the festivum just yet, probably the platy died of other causes and the festivum was just eating it after it died (most fish will do this). I would however look at your stocking options again. Festivums prey on small fish in the wild and will take any chance to eat any smaller...

    Leaving School Tomorrow

You wont be too far from me then, its not as as bad 'up north', the thing I remember about uni is how mixed the people are on the course. Texas Cichlid

Would be great to catch the fish you see in aquariums/shops, though in the UK thats not really a possibility (unles you keep cold water fish or shopping trollies, leather boots or carrier bags in your tanks). What To Be?

Yeah, exactly same as what others have said, good job satisfaction, poor money. Are you in America? As college in the UK means the gap between school and university. I'd suggest doing a uni degree in zoology if thats the route you want to go. My uncle graduated as a marine biologist, he...

No college? Straight from school to uni? Anyway leaving school was up and down for me. You miss your old friends but not the douche's. Not until you've left school until you realise how easy it was. Uni's a lot more relaxed and depends entirely on yourself to be organised/dedicated to do...

    Salvin's Cichlid

Yeah 250 litres isn't really big enough for two severums in my opinion, they are chunky fish. I would be cautious of adding a salvini to a 400 litre tank with severums to be honest...they are mean buggers and can flip overnight. They don't call them 'mini-guapotes' for nothing.

    Time For A Change

An oscar wouldn't fit in that size tank. Also I think you may been abit generous with your suggested dwarf cichlids, though I don't have personal experience with them but I've read 12"x12" footprint for a pair mimimum (which gives 3.85 pairs for a trigon if my calculations are correct).

    Time For A Change

Get a breeding pair of smaller cichlids if you want to see different behaviour. I reckon you could do 2 pairs of smaller apistos/dwarfs given the right tank layout or a pair of medium sized central american cichlids. My prefered option would be the central americans, they tend to have more...

    How Big At One Year?

Agree with Minxfishy, average 6-7" or so. They slow down and bulk out after that. Mine got to be quite a size, many people don't realise how stocky these fish are, but it takes some time to reach full size. Also, are you quite sure its a 'he', females will generally be smaller. It could...

What To Do While On Hoilday

Like Tolak says, just feed less often. A well balanced system should be able to go 2 weeks without a water change. I normally suggest that if your mum isn't that confident / not that experienced in fish then you leave 'pre measured' food. By this I mean measure out the food into containers...

    Flourescent Cichlids

Don't mind them half as much as the deformed fish you see for sale every day eg. fancy goldfish. From what I gather no pain is involved in this and its not detremental to the fish in any way. Its not my cup of tea as like a previous poster I prefer 'natual looking' fish, but I wouldn't have...
