    Looking To Use Slate

Can't be that toxic, it's essentially inert when set.

    Channa Sp. Assam

Cheers invader. I'm not sure on the type of plastic, I'm pretty sure it's safe as I used it to raise a sajica spawn in. Anything food grade will be fine, other things you'll need to be a little more wary.

    Channa Sp. Assam

Yeah, I'll try tomorrow. The tail fin has none of the markings you'd expect from bleheri, but the edging which would make it assam right?

    Channa Sp. Assam

I actually think this fish isn't a bleheri, but that it is actually a Channa sp. assam.

    Water Lettuce

I'm after some water lettuce for a few of my tanks, I can buy or swap, swap will probably have to be Java moss. I'm in Gloucester, England, so unless you are local you'll have to post, I'll cover the cost of that. Reply here or PM if you can offer me some, thanks. Edit to add, if mods think...

    Channa Sp. Assam

How large are you expecting them to get? 12"? No one really knows yet. I'm going to be trying to get hold of a group of Channa to try and breed, will need a little move around to make space but it shouldn't be that hard. Not decided on a species, will need to be a dwarf species though, around...

Are you going to breed the pulchra? Far too many of them seem to be coming in for a new species, galaxy raboras anyone? If pulchra can be bred (which they have been) then the imports can slow down a little, protecting them. How big are yours?

The ornatipinnis look awesome, tad out of my price range right now though :(

    Channa Sp. Assam

Cheers kewskills, the LFS I bought mine from also has pulchra of which all were resevered by a breeder, gaucha which again were resevered and bleheri of which I bought one of the two left. Does he want a group or just one Efsa?

    Channa Sp. Assam

Dane, you know these are much better than plecs ;) Cheers Matt, I say get a ornatipinns haha. Esfa they are in Parkers in Iron Acton, Yate/Bristol way. They have a lot of nice stuff in at the moment, but a lot (most) of the snakeheads are reserved.

    Channa Sp. Assam

I picked up this little guy on Friday after finding an LFS that finally stocks snakeheads. The pictures are through it's temporary plastic tank, hence the greyness.

Rather Urgent! Can You Id These Fish Please?

The fish in the first two pictures I would say is a male Hypsophrys nicaraguensis. However the fish in the third picture is not the same species. I'd guess the fish in the third picture is Aequidens portalegrensis. It could be some other species of Aequidens though.

Remove the fry as soon as you want to. If you have no where to keep them, use them as feeders.

    Green Severum?

Tobigara can you not seen the same red head in the OP's fish? Also the light in which the picture was taken can affect the colours.

Celestial Pearl Danio / Galaxy Rasbora / Fireworks Rasbora

Have you tried wholesalers? They are going to be your best bet for fish in that number. That or just buying lots of groups that are for sale.

    Severum Diet

They may be omnivores but the main part of their diet is vegetable matter. I wouldn't provide "lots" of meaty foods, some yes, but not a lot. I would try to get him onto a decent cichlid pellet, Hikari are my preference. Don't feed him for a few days and try a few pellets.
  22. jayjay

    Green Severum?

Where did you get it from? Did you buy it as a green severum? It could be a cross between a Rokitel and a green. Possibly just an "odd" fry. What has it been fed? Foods containing carotene could possibly make the orange more vivid, maybe not to that degree, but could bring it out more non the...

    Acarichthys Heckelii

A 4" high fish would be fine in 15" tank though. Firemouths are usually said to be fine in a 48x21x13 (or what ever the dimensions are to a 55g). I stand at what I said they'd be fine in a 48x15x12, 48x18x18 would be great yes, but not totally necessary.
  24. jayjay

    Acarichthys Heckelii

They aren't "that" active to require a 48x18x18. The added height matters little, compared to a 15" or even a 12" tall tank. Ideally, yes, the bigger the better, but a minimum size I feel would be 48x15x12. They don't grow that big.
  25. jayjay

    Acarichthys Heckelii

Somewhere around a 48"x15"x12" would be fine for them, that's not really that large compared to many cichlids. As to the original question, they aren't common, but if you want them enough and try hard you should find some.

    Rainbiow Cichlid Help

Separate them whenever you want really, but don't leave it too late or they will be gone again. I prefer to remove the fry when they are free swimming however as the parents do a better job than most people could.

    Randomness

Nice severums, my LFS had some of these "super red" severums in the other day. I have no room for more of them however. I know they aren't talking about true parrot cichlids, but it would be nice to keep them. Not the hybrid rubbish ones, real Hoplarchus psittacus.

    Severums, Blue Acara And Others

Cheers, the sajica tank is a bit of a mess, the plants were literally stuffed anywhere. I also want to take out a few of the pipes and pots on the right once the fish I want to sell in there, go. The BGK is nice, was out practically all day today, took hundreds of photos of it.

    Severums, Blue Acara And Others

I was messing around with my phone today so decided to upload a few (a lot) of the pictures I took. The "bits" in the water in some pictures are due to feeding the fish at the time. L066- Severums- Blue acara pair- Sajica + tank- Satanoperca- Kissing gourami's- BGK-...

    Will They Breed.

Some fish physically can't spawn in water that is very hard and/or alkali, due to the eggs not being able to be fertilized. I'm not too sure about this with rams however, it's just something to keep in mind.

    Id Needed Please.

True surinamensis are very rarely imported. That may be the name it was given where it was purchased, however the chances of it actually being a surinamensis is slim. I'd say it is more likely to be Geophagus abalios.

    Agressive Tri Mac!

I know a few people with pure trimacs; I'd say the ones pictured in this thread are hybrids.
  35. jayjay

    Agressive Tri Mac!

Are you sure they are pure tri macs? You see hardly any now-a-days :( Very rare fish. As for the breeding, I would have used a divider, the fish can still breed through it and not get killed if it all goes wrong. Though if it is working now, you may be in luck.

Firemouth...add More ? What To Do

If the barbs are red tail tinfoils (Barbonymus schwanenfeldii), they'll more likely get 14", than 7". Fire mouths can be kept in groups, I used to keep four together and know of others who keep them together. However, you have a fish that has already established the tank as it's own territory...

    Mixing Larger Americans

12" is a very good size for a severum, not many get that large. 10" would be a better estimate, with quite a few ending around 8-9".

Lots Of Small Tanks Or One Big One?

I say get two 4 foot tanks over one 6 or 7 foot. Like CFC says lots of fish aren't compatible, so you can get different things.

    Same Fish?

Can someone who has said that fish is not the same, explain why they believe they can't change? Many cichlids gain MUCH more colour as they grow. Many midas etc. change colour as they grow. Many cichlids start off dull grey, developing much better colour with better care once brought home and as...

    Blue Acara Fry

I've bred blue acara. Personally, I would say remove them when you want to. Parents do a much better job of raising fry than we could do, so I am leaving fry with the adults now a days. The fry I leave with adults grow bigger, quicker, compared to the ones I've removed and try looking after...
