anybody got any pics of tanks with slate in and any ideas of how to lay out my slate. also wonderd if any 1 knows if i can use super glue

I have slate and granite in mine! I'll show you a pic....but it's not too good yet....there's still a few things I want to do! Mine is 125 us gallons. *one thing...If you use slate, make sure the pieces you get are big enough...mine weren't so it makes it realy hard to stack in a huge tank!

I wouldn't use super glue. There's supposedly a glue that hardware stores carry that says it's ok for aquarium use. I think it's supposed be cheaper than than the items spefically made for aquariums. I've never looked for it or used it....just read about it.

I have large peices of (plum) slate in my tank also... with black rock. Have a look, its in the pinned 'Members Tank Pics' thread.

I dont think super glue is safe to use in aquariums. If your wanting to glue your slate together, i think its recommended to use 'Aquarium Safe Silicone'.... id check in the DIY section. :good:

If you have African rift lake cichlids slate won't do anything to increase the hardness of the water. It is still fine to use but most people use limestone or sandstone for the tank.
Super glue is often used in marine tanks and is considered safe but I have never used it so can't be 100% sure.

few pictures of mine. looks alot better now with algea on the rocks though.

I'm sorry but NOBODY I've ever known in the hobby has used super glue, it's kind of a no brainer how toxic it is...

apparently super glue is non toxic under water. It also sets extremely quickly preventing fumes from being emmitted.
I heard it was developed by the armed forces to join skin back together (seal up wounds) to stop soldiers bleeding to death in the field. Not sure how true that is tho.
If you're concerned and want rocks joined then just use aquarium silicon.

You heard wrong Colin.

seems some do use it to attach corals after fragging but it's advised to use only on coral that will envelope the glue crust quickly....sorry, It's like someone saying, drink gasoline, it's been done before ....HELL no lmaoooo just something in the back of my head that says NO THANK YOU!!! :)

aquatic epoxy or aquatic silicone is my best advice. :good:

gasoline gets drunk around here all the time :)
glue and aerosole cans get sniffed too.

Hey I just live in a bad neighbourhood

you dont need to glue it. makes taking rocks in and out alot easier if you ever need to. not one in my tank is stuck

hey colin there is a type of superglue used to glue skin, dont know if i would put it in a fish tank though.

"Cyanoacrylates were first manufactured in 1949. The first adhesives were noted to have extreme inflammatory effects on tissues. N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, which was developed in the 1970s, was the first adhesive to have negligible tissue toxicity and good bonding strength, as well as acceptable wound cosmesis.

N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate has been used in cartilage and bone grafting, coating of corneal ulcers in ophthalmology, repair of damaged ossicles in otolaryngology, coating of aphthous ulcers" and of cource to glue skin. ive used the stuff and it works well so long as you dont glue yourself to the patient.

Superglue is the glue of choice for sticking coral frags to pieces of rock when doing domestic propogation. If you can apply superglue directly to an animal as sensitive as an SPS coral such as some of the Acoropora spp I would be surprised to see a superglued ornament wipe out a tank.

Superglue is acrylic... same stuff plastic fish tanks are made from, and again, been used for years... a really safe bet, even sets under water.

Can't be that toxic, it's essentially inert when set.
