TBH I wouldn't risk it and would use a paint scraper such as you would use to remove paint from windows. These normally have a stanley blade or similar mounted in them. Yes, it's tough but it's safer than going near the tank with nitromors or white spirit!

It may well have no chlorine/chloramine but you don't know what else is in the rainwater. Think about the industrial pollutants collected in clouds from factories, offices, cars etc. I would (and do) stick to the known quantities of tap water. I voted yes to dechlor too by the way...

Unfortunately not unless you can get hold of some mature media from someone elses tank. Prepare for a shock, the kit at P@H is 27 quid. Regular healthy water changes will keep the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates down and your fish will be happy. Thanks for the correction BTT, duly noted. :)

Are you using the add and wait method? you've only had ammonia in there a couple of days and it's gonna take time for the ABacs to multiply enough to consume it. I wouldn't worry about the cycle stalling right now, it's hardly even started yet. HTH!
