Think I Just Grabbed Myself A Bargain!

Surely if it's UGF then the majority ofthe bacteria will be under the gravel rather than in it? ;)

Ok, I made a couple of assumptions - 1 that the kinect Had to connect via the xbox, 2 that star doesn't have any of the gear and 3 that you only had one tank. Iwas watching the vid on a small screen and didn't see the second tank. You must have also missed the smiley after the "free is good"...

Think I Just Grabbed Myself A Bargain!

According to all readings I have done, there's very little of the beneficial bacteria in the substrate so that wouldn't work. If you are able (and have the patience!), can you not keep the 28l running and do a proper fishless cycle on the 2ft tank?

First up you need to spend the £200 or so on the xbox and then £120 or so on the Kinect... ;) Assuming that you've already got the equipment, why not! free solution always the best! I'm with Malt Vinegar though and would have an IP camera. Of course, most IP cameras (unless you pay a...

    What Is On My Glass?

I have something very similar on a second hand tank I was given. Gave the tank a good clean before I filled it and a couple of weeks later I noticed this strange mark. Turned out it was a stray blob of silicone obviously left there during the manufacturing process. I know it's manufacturing...

Aquascaping A Tank That Will Be Viewed From Both Sides

Could you not 'scape end to end rather than side to side? If that makes no sense - make the end when the filter (internal or external?) in/out would be the "tall" end and work towards the other end getting lower. Or, divide along the length of the tank and make that the tall getting shorter as...

    What Size Heater ?

Can I ask a slightly different, but related question? Whether the tank needs to have 200 or 300 watts, would it be better to go for a single 200/300w heater or a pair of matched 100/150 watt heaters at opposite ends of the tank? Thanks!

    Help Please :-)

I have a 100 watt in my 54 litre (as was recommended by the LFS). I recently completely emptied the tank and then cleaned and refilled with cold tap water (no fish!), dumped the heater and filter in and left it. It took more than 24 hours to heat the tank to 26 degrees from the tap temp of...

    Glass Paint

TBH I wouldn't risk it and would use a paint scraper such as you would use to remove paint from windows. These normally have a stanley blade or similar mounted in them. Yes, it's tough but it's safer than going near the tank with nitromors or white spirit!

Hi Terry I've been sat here for the last few minutes reading and re-reading your post. Firstly, congrats on completing the quali week (+3!) Your LFS lady needs some education. She is wrong, you are right. 1. TAP WATER generally has 20 - 40 ppm NitrAte so completely getting rid of it is...

    Amount Of Filtration?

Is this the 10 gallon you're intending to put a Betta in? I believe (through lots of reading) that Bettas don't like a large flow of water. Some people go as far as dumping the standard HOB or internal filter and make a small sponge filter. As you're (I think) already cycling this filter go...

    Problems With Lighting

The electrical contractors at work came to investigate a problem on our server UPS which would regularly, but not constantly show an overvoltage. They monitored the incoming voltage for a week and it spiked at 256 volts. They explained at the time (only a couple of months ago) that the UK...

    Who Does And Who Doesn't

It may well have no chlorine/chloramine but you don't know what else is in the rainwater. Think about the industrial pollutants collected in clouds from factories, offices, cars etc. I would (and do) stick to the known quantities of tap water. I voted yes to dechlor too by the way...

    Hypothetical Question

My only question would be, why risk it? People know there's chlorine in the tap water, 5 ml per 10 litres (bucket size), takes 5 seconds to add so why not just chuck it in? I realise that my tanks are tiny (largest is 54 litres) so my 20% change is only one bucket but I would guess that on a...

2 Ten Gallons To A 29 Gal. Water Readings :(

    Cloudy Water During Cycling

A few questions if I may: 1. Do you have a test kit? 2. Do you know the current water stats? 3. Have you read the pinned thread on fishless cycling? 4. Do you have a heater in the tank? 5. What size is the tank? 6. What decorations are in the tank? The cloudy water shouldn't be a huge...

Um, Shlong - from reading your post at least twice I believe you have two tanks? a 17 litre and a new 95 litre? The 17 litre has the guppy and the 95 litre has water but no fish? If this is correct then I would highly recommend following OM47's advice on the 17 litre and fishless cycle the...

Ammonia Issues - Levels Too High

Unfortunately not unless you can get hold of some mature media from someone elses tank. Prepare for a shock, the kit at P@H is 27 quid. Regular healthy water changes will keep the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates down and your fish will be happy. Thanks for the correction BTT, duly noted. :)
