I smoked for about 35 years and gave it up the day I went to the hospital for my cancer surgery. That was 9 years ago and I only had to fight the addiction for the first few months while using nicotine skin patches. The radiation treatments felt like they were going to kill me while I was still suffering withdrawal symptoms.

Since posting this topic, I think my smoking rate increased..... Just the thought of quitting.. makes me nervous, and I grab for another (nail in my coffin)... The arguements of financial gain holds no water & will not motivate me.... If health issues comes into play.... (just grabbed another cigarrette).... I might be convinced....

Overall, though... it looks like most quitters aclaims success to the patches.... Now!!!!... lets get a group together of people who really wants to quit.... I'm in!!, but I need (daily motivation) from others walking the path with me.... are you in... ?????

To start me off.... I intend to smoke only one cigarrette per hour on the hour for the next 3 days.... any takers to join me??.... (at least I'll know... it is only another hour to wait. This method will at least bring me down from 60 cigarettes per day to around 14.

Daily.... (honest) report backs need to be made... (they say it is easier in a group) so join me.

hi Ludwig when i quit i went to bed saying to my self i must give up smoking
i went to sleep saying it i woke up the next morning and i still had the need
for a ciggie but i just kept saying no any way got the first week out of the week
but not easy by a long chalk i had the shakes sweats the running to the loo the whole nine yards but if you stick to it you will beat it is hard but dont give in
you will feel better at the end of it all think positive you dont need the patches there just as bad as a ciggie soon you'll be doing 20 of them a day lol
so stick in and so no to the ciggies

it'll be very diffecult to cut from that amount without having something at hand Lud, get mints or sweets and when you feel that you need a cig within the hour reach for a sweet!

Being a Diabetic at the same time does not really promote the sweets theory then....

Then again knowing lud, he'll overdose on beta carrotien and turn orange.

Personally, I do not smoke. There are several reasons for that. First off, they cost a lot of money. I see people I know complain how they never have any money (as they light up in front of me). Second off, I don't want to ruin any chance of living a long life because of a disgusting habit. I also may have a high risk for cancer. My great grandma died from it, my grandma had it twice, my aunt had it, and so did my uncle. So why would I want to help the cancer out? Not only that, I usually associate people who smoke with drinking (and other activities). It's not that I think drinking is some abomination (I have never drunk before), but I don't want to be a alcoholic and a smoker! That's asking to die young. I do not like it when people smoke around me. If it did not affect MY health, I wouldn't care. But when you smoke, your not only hurting yourself, but your hurting your family. I would never endanger my family. Especially with something as silly as smoking. Which is why I do not approve of people smoking in their houses (granted, no one asked for my approval).

So basically, No I do not smoke. I do not ever want to smoke. I do not approve of others smoking, and I do not appreciate it when they smoke near me.

* The state of Illinois (where I reside) passed a law last year restricting smokers from smoking in ANY public building. I like the law. A lot.

Personally I find it disgusting that smokers are dictated to, IMO they should be allowed to smoke where and when they want. Its stupid that they have to go 8 million miles from a non-smoker just for a cigerette. Obviously places like hospitals should be non-smoking, since people cant leave if they disagree. But resturants and pubs should cater for both types.

I am a non smoker myself, never smoked. Yet I believe its a persons right to smoke if they want to, they've bought the fags and paid the taxes.

I know a lot of people who smoke, but I choose not too. The biggest reason why I don't smoke is the sheer fact that I don't like the smell, the habit, the cost, or the health issues that will inevitably arise with time, the second reason I don't smoke is because my mom's entire side of the family (except herself) is addicted to something, be it ciggaretts, alcohol, illegal substances, etc. so I have a very high risk of addiction and as an example of my high risk of addiction, I have been addicted to gum before! Of all things, yes, gum. It's pretty funny, I know, but think, if I could get addicted to GUM, imagine how easy it would be for me to become addicted to ciggaretts. I'm not addicted to gum anymore but still, the thought of how easily i'd get hooked onto ciggaretts scares me away from them every time. I wish you all who are quitting or thinking about it the best of luck though! :)

Started when i was 11, remember buying 20 decks off people at school for 50p who stole them off their parents. If i go on to join the RAF will quit when i get my date for selection. Regret starting but do love it, prob cos im addicted :hyper:

It's interesting to note that the younger members have been well programed to avoid this addictive habit and to scorn people who indulge in it. Older members, like you and I, Ludwig Venter, were programed differently. We were brought up at a time when smoking was not only socially acceptable but sophisticated and desirable. Do you remember the old advertisements we were constantly bombarded with? Check these out:
