I mentioned to my brother I needed to purchase ammunition for the 22 Ruger and the Linda's 30-30, (will also purchase for 3-08 while I am at it. I have not needed to buy ammo in a few years, being well stocked. My brother informed me we now have to go through a the same background check needed to buy a rifle when doing so, effective January 2024.

Linda and I can pass such a check without issue BUT I refuse to go through such a process. Looks like a day trip to Vermont is upcoming. Will likely dust the reloading equipment off as well.

I just went to a retirement party for a couple buddies my age, both are shooters, with one going out prairie dogging in a few weeks... I still reload most all I shoot for, but I tried buying them each a box of 223 ammo, and I was surprised at the lack of availability of hollow points... I ended up having to choose soft points over FMJ's and for good domestic manufacture, came out to $1.50 a round... I'm going back to the basement for my ammo... but even reloading today is costly, if you don't have the components on the shelf... primers and powders are ridiculous, I have a buddy that wants me to coach him on reloading, but he has no components, except the brass he's been saving...

Is reloading cheaper then buying?

significantly, especially if you have components on the shelf, before the prices went up drastically... but if you need to buy components today, there is not much savings, and certain cartridges like 12 Ga. shot shells, can be bought for cheaper than they can often be reloaded, but ,410 shells are way more expensive, than they can be reloaded for, as are several specific cartridges like 30-30 and 45-70 for example... handgun calibers are usually a wash, unless you are dealing with a unique cartridge
