Target practice, anyone else enjoy shooting?

Contender??? FIL had about 25 barrels... I think it was taken over by S&W, but not supported, as the Encore ( Contender's big brother ) can handle their proprietary rounds, like the 460, and 500 S&W's, and now the AR platform is shooting all the old Contender cartridges, albeit they are all renamed... I continued FIL's collection, when it came here, and had over 40 different barrels at one time... at least half went down the road, when I had my big sell off...

someone else ( like SSK ) is making actions now that fit all the barrels out there...

AR platform is great. I've built numerous rifles in many different calibers. I've Built on all 3 lowers, the AR9, AR10 & AR15. My favorite 3 builds so far have been 6.5 creedmoor on the AR10 lower, a .50cal beowulf on the AR15 & an AR9 indoor fighter. Ive shot the 6.5 creedmoor to 700 yards. It's flawless, cycles like a champ, trigger fires when you sneeze and it's been dead nuts accurate so far. Ive only got about 400 rounds thru it so the jury's still out on the barrel but so far so good. The .50cal beowulf is fun to shoot, expensive but fun. We stacked 2 car doors back to back and at 75yds it went through both like nothing. Awesome rifle.

Ive built a few 308s on the AR10 lowers but I just haven't been too fond of any of those builds. You can keep throwing money at them i guess but I ain't gonna. Just seems like there's always an issue whether it's with the mag-well or the bcg or getting the buffer spring right to get the gun to fire how i want. It's always something.. JP Enterprises makes nice silent capture buffer springs, i use them in everything but i havent got the weight correct yet for my liking in the 308s. The 6.5 was perfect just the way I initially built it but my luck with AR10s seemed to have stopped there. All the AR 15 stuff is a dime a dozen, there's so many great parts readily available compared to the ar10.

I highly recommend the JP stuff though, quality quality quality...

I built an AR, into a prairie dog rifle, back when they all had handles ( starting with one of the very first "flat tops", with a 20 X scope, match barrel, and with a compensator... 223 was the only game in town, for that model, back then... it was interesting, as you could watch the bullet impact 400 yards away... a buddy wanted the rifle, so much , I finally sold it to him... I'm a handloader ( comes from having all the Contenders ) so the AR isn't really my style... I didn't have another for 30 years ( kind of like the fish hobby ) they changed significantly in 30 years... last month, I picked up a Sota Arms ( a local manufacture ) in 7.62 X 39... I also have a Czech bolt carbine in that caliber, which I greatly enjoy, using modern USA made ammo, or my handloads... the bulk of my collection are revolvers, lever, or bolt action rifles, which seem to be more conductive to hand loading...

My dad built an AR-15; I believe it's in the traditional .223. Looks cool and I'm sure it's fun to shoot, but I haven't had the chance to try it out yet.

I hunt with a .270, and I have bony shoulders. I'm sure that combo is the main reason I don't shoot firearms for fun a whole lot. After about 5-6 shots, my shoulder gets sore and it just ain't fun anymore. We put a nice, squishy butt pad on it a couple years ago, and it's a lot better now.

@lottabubbles I think I could get into black powder. I got to shoot a .50 flint lock at a rendezvous a while back. Pretty cool. I love the delay. Pull the trigger...click...BOOM! Encourages a person to have a good rest!

@Colin_T The American fascination with firearms for defense, hunting, and enjoyment goes back at least, oh, 300 years or so. But let's avoid turning this political, shall we? I'm enjoying seeing everybody's arms.

I've thought about investing in a pistol of some sort, as both long bows and .270 rifles are garbage for self-defense. But I've never been able to hit much with a pistol, and don't see myself investing the time to change that. Guess I'll just stick with my old plan of hitting the burglar over the head with a tea mug.

Be safe, everybody!

My Pops loved to shoot clay, But hated the traps, because they where too consistent and easy to anticipate.

So I volunteered more than once to operate it and had lots of fun, playing with angles, not releasing when told, putting surprise double dish...

When he called, I was waiting until his head turn around to look at me before pulling. loll.

He hated that.

Sounds like field archery (commonly called stump shooting) or 3d archery vs Olympic target archery. The former is a lot more fun because it’s varied and unpredictable. Target archery is a real yawner. If the Olympics had field archery, with no sights or range finders allowed, people might actually watch Olympic archery.
