Well then Ludwig. How are you doing? Have you quit yet? Or cut down? Or still telling yourself you really should?

I'm on day 4 now. So about half way through the hardest part. I've known I needed to quit for a while now. And this month our pay just hasn't seemed to last. Smoking is extremely expensive so I decided to quit, and my wife has cut down.

The bonus is, with her still smoking, what money would have been spent on cigarettes, I get to spend on lenses and stuff for my camera. Looking at the nikkor 50mm f1.8. We have no money now but next month I will have saved that much and we will have the money.

giving up is psychological, it's a habit. Find something to replace that need to smoke, mind you, when I gave up, I started chewing the ends of pens  patches etc didn't help, i just kept myself busy, wanted a smoke, I'd have a mint or make a cuppa.

Did you know that the smoke that lingers on your clothes can effect children in your household? esp if they have asthma, so going outside for a cig will only eliminate the smell inside and some chemicals but you will still have those chemicals on your clothing, that are brought back inside the house, when you re-enter.

Giving up smoking, means you will get your tastebuds back, smoking culls them. I never knew how good fresh strawberries tasted etc, until a month after giving up smoking, sounds silly but it's amazing how your sense of taste and smell perk yup, when you give up. Ohhh and you will also sleep better :good:

Smoking has been banned in pubs, bars and clubs here, got an issue with someone smoking outside, move away from them. After all, you'll only be dealing with pollution from cars, planes and factories, afterwards :good:

No one should dictate if homes should have smoking banned, that's control, therefore, why should people pay their own mortgage, if they can not do what they like in their own home. I gave up smoking on new yr's day this year, after smoking for 14yrs and never regretted it!

The gov keep raising tax on cigs, non-smokers shouldn't complain, it's not your life or issue, if people want to spend money. It's always the stuck up brigade who are 'better than the rest', have to kick up a stonk..........

As for drinking, i barely drink but that is my personal option, i have no issues with drinkers or smokers

You're right with the tastebuds. Unfortunately culling tastebuds was a good thing for me since I hate so many foods. Not being able to taste properly meant I could stand to eat a little more healthily.

I think giving up is different for everyone. Patches allow you to separate the mental addiction and the chemical addiction. You still have to tackle them both, but you can do them separately. I think they work better on people who have a strong chemical addiction and a weak mental addiction.

I think the best way to quit is to be honest with yourself. If you're going to light a cigarette then ask yourself if you really want it.

With how many you smoke Ludwig I think a simple way to cut down a large amount would be to wait 20 minutes for it. So when you would normally have a cigarette check the time, then after 20 minutes go have it.

Although it'll be better for children as a whole if the government could somehow ban smoking in the home... I too don't think it's right to dictate that to people. Having said that...flip side, how many laws do we have to follow even though we're 'in our own home'... it's just the laws we have now are mostly accepted and followed for the average person with no complaint about 'human rights'.
Just saying... there are two ways to look at things.

Personally I don't have a problem with smokers, but do wish they wouldn't purely because it's completely destructive. It cuts your life expectancy, increases the chance of ending up in hospital and costs a fortune... there is no 'buzz' or 'high' from it in any sense so it just doesn't make sense to me why anyone would start. I get why people continue once addicted... but it's the starting bit that really confuses me.

Eitherways, whilever no one is blowing smoke in my face, and I'm only around it because I've chosen to be then that's fine with me. :good:

i gave up smoking 1st time round as i was pregnant, dr in said that i shouldn't just stop as it would induce coughing fits that could cause a miscarriage..........whether or not true, i dunno.

But smoking became the 1 thing that would make me throw up,well, besides red meat

so ludwig, get preggers

Smoking is a weird one for me, got pushed into it peer pressure!! when I decided to give up it was easy, then I had a car crash, (some idiot drove straight into me) and while shaking on the roadside someone gave me a ciggy and I was hooked again. I gave up again some months later but one of my dogs had a serious accident and while waiting for the vet to call I ended up buying a packet and chain smoking, my dog ended up having surgery quite alot to get her right (she broke her neck) and each operation resulted in my smoking (had no fingernails left). Once she was better (took months of re-abilitation etc) I stopped again, then my dad had a stroke so I reached for the fags again he sadly died and I continued smoking. I decided last year I was giving up again, I had been off the fags 3 weeks when one of my dogs was diagnosed with bone cancer, now I quit giving up smoking because something bad happens when I do!

I smoke and enjoy it.
But for those who want to quit, try champax (spelling). I know a few people who used it and said it was easy!

Hey I agree with your comments! Respect ;)

From what I know (and I dont know much at all) smoking will/can cause your baby to be smaller. It stunts the growth of the fetus while in the womb and it can stunt the growth of chrildren.

yeah, read about the stunting growth etc, i gave up smoking within 2 weeks of finding out i was preggers, so around 9 weeks gone.

my boy is anything but growth stunted

i gave up smoking roll-ups on May 1st this year, and went onto nicorette cartridges. then i got addicted to those lol. in the last 2 days i have completely given up nicotine.

everyone told me as soon as i gave up cigs i would taste more - what a load of crap that was! sleep better - nope! skin & hair better - nope! feel better for it - nope, not at all!! ( i can ride further on my bike than i used to though!)

would i go back to smoking? no, coz i gave up for my kids sake. didnt want them to see me smoking, just so they didnt see it as the norm. it isnt, and will be done less and less.

do i miss it? yep!

The Poll didn't include Pipe smoking.

I smoke a pipe. The smoke isn't inhaled. People tend to like the smell of pipe smoke - I get comments like "I am against smoking but your pipe smells lovely, it reminds me of my Grandad".

No comments about mouth cancer please - there is no evidence.

Just another thought. if you wish to give up smoking, have you tried nasal snuff? It was considered posh many years ago .... Snuff is still available. Google it.

I'm on day nine now. Getting easier, slightly. Plus extra motivation. My mother in law (who we live with at the mo) was rushed too hospital the other day because she couldn't breathe. Walking upstairs to go to the toilet was enough to get her out of breath (similar to a 5 mile run would with me) so she had to sit at the bottom of the stairs, she couldn't make it as far as a chair. She has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Go ahead and google it. It's simply from chain smoking for the last 40 years. At the rate I'm going things will get easier because it'll be a completely smoke free house. I've already asked my wife if she wants to go through what she's just seen her mum go through.
