Yes, I would like to rant.
In order to save one's hard-earned, the_lock_missus and I have elected to take our main summer holiday this year in the June half-term, rather than August, and in doing so saved about £700. Hooray for us.
I have recently gone to Brittany Ferries website to book our crossing. Back in the summer, we contemplated a short break in France, and looked at both Brittany Ferries and LD Lines, the former would have cost about £250, the latter about £200. Imagine our surprise, then, when the quoted price was over £600! Now, admittedly, we have also purchased a roof-box, and this would add a certain amount to the price. However, I decided to get a price for a 3 night break in August, in order to get a like-for-like comparison. Quoted cost £438, about a 75% increase over last summer.
I then proceeded to get a price from P&O Dover-Calais, for our required dates in June, and the price there was only £110. Now, one expects to pay more to go from Portsmouth, it being a longer journey (obviously), but one could also count on the saving of petrol on both sides of La Manche, which in previous years, would have cancelled out much of the higher ferry fare.
But £500 more!!!!!!!!!!! Even allowing for 3 extra hours driving, which I would value at about £50, we are clearly way better off going Dover-Calais. Which is ridiculous, given that we live 10 minutes drive from Portsmouth Ferry Port.
I contacted Brittany Ferries' Customer Lack of Service Department, and asked about these two factors. I asked why they felt it justifiable to make more profit from a client going for 7 nights, rather than 3, and apparently, no, this isn't profiteering, they give a special offer to customers going 5 nights or less, they aren't making extra profit. Erm......
And apparently, the rather excessive increase in fares for this year is in no way, shape or form, anything to do with the fact that LD Lines have withdrawn their FastCat service to Le Havre, no, not at all. No. Certainly not. Presumably they've just withdrawn the special offer they gave every single customer last summer?
Rant over, thank you for reading.
