22 Litre Betta Tank

Oh man, as if seeing all the big bettas in tiny cups isn't bad enough, now petco has teeny baby bettas :*(    I wanted to buy them all!

Vader is one lucky guy, tank looks great! When I set up my 10 gal, I'm for sure using black sand, I love it!

Baby bettas?? Awe bless!

Thank you, I think Vader is happy in his home :D

To think I asked the shop keeper about which bettas he had, he was showing me all his 'posh ones' and I had a close look at them all before I reserved one. He went off to serve someone else, when I noticed vaders green with algae breeding chamber. Took a closer look to see if a fish was in there, and could just about see him moving about. I asked if I could reserve him, when he said he had comp, every forgotten about that one - poor Vader!

Still, a happy ending :D

Looking forward to watching a journal for your tank :)

I'm the same way with cories ..."oh there's only one cory in this tank, I better bring him home..."   lol

I finally added the link to my journal in my sig  I did however just update it this mornin ;)

So it would appear Vader isn't so happy in his home - he is biting his tail! :(

Sorry not good pics, best I could do with a crying baby on the bed! :/

Not sure why the first pic isn't working?? Here it is again:

Ok it doesn't want to load! Don't know why.

RCA's your girl for this one! I'd be inclined to suggest indian almond leaves - meant to be soothing , but I know RCA has had this problem and can probably advise you better.

Thanks, I have them on order and have turned up the tank temperature :(

Not sure if these are any better?

Aw no, how old are the baby bettas?  Can there not be a petition to stop them and Walmart selling and killing so many.  I hate seeing the way they get treated by these stores.  You seen the girl on Youtube who goes in with clean water and tries to change them without the store noticing, it is very sweet, bless her as she means well.

Thanks Mamashack, although personally I do not have tail to bite

With tail biters it is either stress or boredom, what I did with my boy is I initially changed his tank round.  Then added a few small fish, and also more recently some Amano Shrimp.
Of course the IAL's and keeping the water pristine is key especially in the initial stages.  I also gave my boy salt baths (Aquarium Salt) for a few days when he first did this, but some people do not agree with them, I felt it would prevent secondary infection, and we have had no further problems with him.  He is somethimes seen chasing the smaller fish or the shrimp, although is too slow to figure out he will never catch them!

The other thing is good quality food, and I find the live food also assists in preventing this behaviour.

Here he is:

with some returning tail growth, which is very slow

Thanks RCA - he is so feisty with other fish - I saw this in the store when I asked to have a closer look at him and smaller fish swam in his breeding chamber.

I changed the water on Saturday so hope that's not the problem :/ I do need to do parameters tonight, just putting children to bed.

Boredom - hmm :( you'd hunk he'd of done this before I got him in that small breeding chamber! Haven't really got any room to change things around unless I take the wood out - but h always swimming through the hole.

Maybe I will be setting up this larger tank when it arrives, to give a bit more space for change?

Does it look from the pictures that I need to add anything to the water to treat his tail?

Have been having a look on the net re boredom breakers, maybe ill see if I can find a ping pong ball lol.

There was a bubble nest though when I performed a water change so I thought he was happy :/ bettas hey???!!!

I'm not sure how old the babies were, they're soooo small though.  Maybe 1/4 to a 1/2 inch long :(** That's the face I meant, not the weird lip one lol.  I've sworn off buying anything from petco from now on, all of their tanks at the store in my town have fin rot most of the time, and it's been that way for a good year now. And the addition of the little baby bettas was the last straw for me

Shelster, I wouldn't add anything to the water unless you think it's getting infected, then I would go with Bettafix. Until then, nice clean water is the best you can do for him :) A ping pong ball actually sounds like a great idea for a betta!!!  Anything floating seems to keep them busy, IME!!

Thanks greenmumma - it's always something isnt it!!

I shall look into the ping pong ball tomorrow :)

I have tested the water:

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 10

So all is well there.

Ha ha excellent! Don't think I could afford one of those lol - I do have an underwater camera though! Perhaps he could do a video diary!

Day 12 -" stupid human is not understanding my stress signals, I shall have to bite my tail to ensure my message gets through!"
