    Experience With Gymnogeophagus?

They wouldn't really have any plants in their natural habitat.. stones, roots, possibly floating vegetation.

    Experience With Gymnogeophagus?

They don't grow particularly large so I'd recommend getting a juvenile group of 6 to 8 and letting them pair off. Maybe construct two sets of territories at either end of the tank.

    Experience With Gymnogeophagus?

Gymnogeophagus are an entirely different genera of fish to standard Geophagus minxfishy :) They live in significantly cooler waters.. from 21°C to 25°C, rather than the Geophagus "standard" of 27°C to 31°C. It's highly recommended to give this genera of fish an "overwinter" period where they're...

    Thorichthys Ellioti

My ellioti were the most aggressive cichlids I've ever kept. Two of my six were battered to death within four days of me getting them, even though the tank was literally crammed full of rocks and planted bogwood. In the end I was forced to get rid of them. I've heard some people suggest ellioti...

    Ripped Green Terror

Gonna have to disagree with that one. If the fish was in with fish large enough [or of high enough quantity] to rip those fins to shreds over a short period of time, that's horrendously irresponsible stocking. If the GT was battered over a longer period of time then the LFS simply aren't looking...

    What Fish Is This?

That is a Thoricthys ellioti juvenile, probably around four months old. There are pictures of mine in the "Member's Cichlids" thread pinned at the top of this forum. I would be careful. You may find in a month or two that they suddenly start to get immensely aggressive towards one another...

Anyone Keep Or Experience On Satanoperca Leucosticta (jurupari)

Yeah I use cichlid pellets.. Tony Tan's Discus pellets. I don't buffer my water at all - the softer the better, generally.

Anyone Keep Or Experience On Satanoperca Leucosticta (jurupari)

In the wild they sift through the substrate for small crustaceans.. so you can't go wrong with your general frozen variants of cyclops, bloodworm, glassworm etc. They'll quite happily eat chopped garden earthworm too, though I wouldn't recommend feeding that to them too regularly. There's not...

Anyone Keep Or Experience On Satanoperca Leucosticta (jurupari)

They are absolutely stunning - I'm so jealous :) Where did you pick them up from? You don't live near Newcastle do you....? :) The way you've described it, it just sounds like he's trying to get at food from the substrate. If he can swim normally 90% of the time, I wouldn't worry about it too...

Anyone Keep Or Experience On Satanoperca Leucosticta (jurupari)

I currently have both S. jurupari and S. leucosticta, as well as two other species of Satanopercoid. Can you get any pictures of the ill fish, Alan? It sounds like a swim bladder problem, or a constipation problem - both of minx's suggestions are accurate. There's not a lot we can do without...

    Name That Geo!

The true G. surinamensis are from a specific location. Very similar-looking species, occurring elsewhere, have different species names. They are certainly of the surinamensis group though :)

    Stocking Suggestions/assistance 125 Gallon

Hi mate. Do you have any evidence to support your theory about the EBJDs having a weaker immune system? From the research I've done, it would appear that the EBJDs have a problem with their immune system in the first few months of their lives which is the reason they're never seen in the wild...

    Advice

All Cichlids are from the same family as the Jewel Cichlid - Cichlidae  Sorry, I'm such a geek  Five Star General, aka Hemichromis elongatus. They're a very aggressive cichlid. Info here.

    Surinam Geo's

Personally.. I would never touch any short bodied "hybrid". I could go on a huge rant.. but for your sake.. I'm going to try not to :) To summise.. their lifespans will inevitably be cut short, they are significantly more delicate and you will never have any chance of breeding them. Bear that in...

    Surinam Geo's

Excuse my ignorance.. "SB"? Rather than using the blackwater extract, you can just throw some peat in a filter bag, wedge it in your filter and everything is perfect :) Don't expected rooted plants to last long. Floating plants and plants attached to bogwood might work nicely, but anything else...

    Surinam Geo's

Get some pics before you purchase them Gill, I'm a bit worried from the way you've described them. If they look like those juvenile G. surinamensis, they certainly shouldn't have nuchal humps.. or anything even approaching a nuchal hump. What size are they? In fairness.. if they're quality...

    Surinam Geo's

Difficult to tell without the pictures but it almost sounds like they're stunted. If they're true Geophagus surinamensis (which is actually quite unlikely), they should be achieving at least 10" TL.. probably more like 12". It could be that they're actually (poooorly) mislabelled Geophagus...

    Would These Work Well Together

That fish is actually Satanoperca leucosticta - the most common mistake made by fish shops. Satanoperca jurupari are a more plain fish with no gill plate flecking. My S. daemon, S. jurupari and S. pappaterra are particularly aggressive towards conspecifics. The only other cichlid I've kept them...

    Would These Work Well Together

Personally I wouldn't mix the jurupari with non eartheating cichlids. You might find it's no problem, but at the same time, you could find absolute devastation. Also, true jurupari can grow to one foot each, though the true species are rarely seen in shops. Do you have any pictures of the...

    Geophagus

Threadfin acara (Acaricthys heckelli) are absolutely gorgeous fish mate :) Wait 'til they're around the six inch mark and you'll see exactly what I mean :) My Satanoperca daemon [used to be classified as Geophagus daemon] came in to the LFS I was working in, in a batch amongst Central/North...

Wholesale Value Of Apisto Cacatuoides "orange Flash"

TBH on second thoughts £4 might be a bit too expensive. I'd probably just count the number of possible pairs you can have (i.e. you have 25 fish but maybe 5 more females than males), then offer them for £3 per pair and remind him that he can flog them for £8 to £10 per pair when they're a little...

Wholesale Value Of Apisto Cacatuoides "orange Flash"

Cheap as chips unfortunately mate, they're probably the most common Apistogramma.. and one of the easiest to breed, which further reduces their price. For 25 at 1.5" TL I'd be asking about £4 per pair.

    Uaru

Uaru aren't sexually dimorphic, meaning there is no visual differences between males and females. The best way to sex them is to grow up a group of six juveniles and let them pair off. They reach 14" in the wild but usually only about 12" in captivity. Minimum tank size would be 48" x 18" x...

Need As Much Advice As Possible

I currently have 6 juvi EBJDs. Don't worry mate - they're not THAT sensitive. Basically, when they're really small (i.e. <1"), they're at their weakest. The EBJD is the same fish as the JD (according to mitochondrial DNA testing) but it is believed that in the wild the blue JD fry don't...

How Many (if Any) Discuss Can I Keep In A 46 Gallon Tank?

Hehe nah the Discus Tetra (Brachychalcinus orbicularis) does exist. It's not colourful like a Discus, but it has a similar, discus-esque body shape. Link here.

    Apistogramma Cacatuoides Fry?

It might be worth purchasing some liquifry, which you would literally be able to squirt into their corner. Yer mate that's a hell of a stocking list  I wouldn't get your hopes up, but you never know eh? :) If they last a couple of weeks, they'll be fine. It's at night that they'll struggle...
