Well basically I saw a GT in the corner of a tank that had been ripped to shred (in the tank with about 40 other fish 8"+) and this guy was only 3" max. He was sitting still and really on his way out, my sister felt sad for him, we asked the man and got him for free. My Question is:

The Fins havent been ripped out in chunks and in some places actually chunks of the top of the fish has been ripped out and his mouth is pretty mangled. Im dosing with Pimafix and Melafix, is this the right way to be treating this?

im not 100% sure but thats how i treated my plec. he soon grew his fins back. leaves a slight mark though. like the newer fin parts were a slightly lighter colour.

Keep an eye out it looks pretty bad. What you are treating with is fine for the moment, but it it gets any worse or you start to notice any white growth around it, then you will need to switch onto some stronger medications.

Water changes are a must in this case. More then the regular weekly w/c should be done!

Pimafix and Melafix require 1 week of dosing then water change, what stronger meds are there?

Meh most of their other stock was ok, Just victim of circumstance I think mate :good:
Gonna have to disagree with that one. If the fish was in with fish large enough [or of high enough quantity] to rip those fins to shreds over a short period of time, that's horrendously irresponsible stocking. If the GT was battered over a longer period of time then the LFS simply aren't looking after their stock.

Disagree all you like lol, Facts are on my side, so is first person view....

kind of my thoughts

Nice job saving the poor guy :good:

If it were me, I would try to have that guy isolated. wouldn't want your oscar picking up something nasty and he doesn't need to go through the treatment as well.

edit: I would continue with the pimafix and melafix. If you start to see infection though (certainly possible with that sort of damage), switch over to Marcyn 1 & 2.

Ok Remz, Hopefully the oscar will be out of there tmorrow and into his new home...., he has quite alot of personality already, but the oscar and the GT never leave eachothers side. Its a bit wierd/Gay :D, Bit homoerotic compared to my African tank lol.....

Whats minimum tank size for GT?

doing it right ace. minimum stress as suggested. can treat with melafix and such( be on the look out for other infections) and definatly keep the water in top notch condition, and do it with very large WCs

Thats just what the company recommends but as long as you are only replacing the medication you are removing, you are fine.

If he starts to get sick there are stronger medications that can be used, as someone said Marcyn is good (never used it as it's only available in the UK.) You could also try Neoplex, Kanaplex (recommend this one), Paraguard, Polyguard or Sulfathiazole (all by Seachem.) Remember though, Mela/Primafix are pretty mild.

THanks for all the information people, much apreciated. Ill keep you updated
