How Do You Dispose Of Dead Fish?

Compost pile, and as Griz said all my old water goes to plants in the house and yard

    Python won't work

Well, first of all I should make the disclaimer that I don't use my Python to syphon the water out. I drain it into a bucket (with a regular aquarium syphon) and just use the Python to fill the tank. I find it easier that way for one person to use it. But when I have used the syphon on my...

What is the stupid thing you have ...

OK, the one I have done a couple of times is... come in from outside look at my fish tank, think to myself "Man that looks dark, I can't believe I did not turn on the light.." Turn off the light, take off my sunglasses, and think to myself, what an idiot B) THe other one I have done once to...

    Want to use real plants

This may sound callous, but there is only one way to find out. People regularly rearrange their tanks, so I don't think it would be too big of a deal for them. Good luck and enjoy

    fish for clean driftwood

If you do not have any plants I know (some) plecos eat wood. If you have any plants the plecos might eat them so I would not go with them. They would not eat enough that you would notice it I believe, but I imagine they would help keep it clean. Good luck.

    Blue-green algae (I think)

I am beseiged by some algae or bacteria that I thought was blue-green algae at first. Now I think it is something else. I can't remember the name of it, but it is not an algae. I think it is caused, well helped, by having too much iron on the water. Does it come off in sheets? If it is on...

Please, when a fish is flushed kill it first

"wouldn't it be better not to flush dead fish down the toilet? that can release nasties into our water systems" Yes, but people have this weird facination with flushing fishies and I figured I may as well make it better rather than stopping it all together  But yes, garbage, compost...

Please, when a fish is flushed kill it first

I just read about flushing some live critters down the toilet. I did not want to get involved with the morality of what was done, or seem like I have a problem with that person in particular. I just want to emphasize that one should make sure any animal they flush is dead first. If your too...

    Water changes with buckets...

First off, I am not that impressed with my python. Wasn't that much more work to use buckets and my plants were happier getting fish water. One other thing I have heard about hot water heaters is sometimes they fill up with sediment and rust. If you clean out your water heater every once in a...

Random thought, I would not recommend...

"No risk of scratches on the class this way" Well, I have no class, so I don't have to worry about scracthing it! :D Good idea btw, I'll remember that when my cleaner gets too much sand stuck in it.

Random thought, I would not recommend...

I have one of those magnetic cleaners for the sides of my tank. The one I have in my 55 does not float. At least once per cleaning that *#$@er drops into the sand and when I get it stuck back to the side there is at least one grain of sand in it. I always am glad I am using it on a glass tank...

    horses anyone?

I use to board horses. (not for very long) I found I like horses more than the people who own them (no offense) There was one that was a real pain, and his owner stiffed me for three months worth of boarding fees, and I fed them every morning and night. That is the one that got me to quit...

How bout making this a thread to blow off

When you buy gas, do you expect the gas attendant to be able to tell you about what the octane level means? Or to be able to diagnose your car problems? Just playing devils advocate here. I think they should know about their products, and care for the fish. But most people I think just...

    Clams

I have read (tried a search and did not find where it was) that they are one of the invasive species that a number of areas are having problems with. In other words don't release them into the wild if you get tired of them. (I doubt you would, just letting people know) Ahh, just found the...

Keeping a bare tank; Is this recommended?

I have read that it is not a bad idea with large messy fish (Oscars were mentioned). Lets you see how nasty the tank is getting and is easier to clean. A buddy of mine did not have enough gravel in his tank and I pushed it over so that there was a section with a bare bottom :hey: . The Oscars...

    channle cats

No it would not be happy in a ten gallon. No, a fish will not limit it's growth enough that you could put it in a tank that is a third of the length that the fish will eventually grow to. I did say a ten gallon would not be sufficient in my previous post. (I do not mean to sound rude in...

    channle cats

Are you serious? If you are serious, no a ten gallon would not be sufficient. In fact I would be wary of a store that sold you one and did not inform you of how big they get. I admit that is the customers responsibillity to know, but a channel cat? C'mon a fish store should ask about that...

Anyone know anyone who has TB due to fish?

ACK, sorry I have heard fish can carry TB. Has anyone else heard of this? Know anyone who has ever been infected from fish? Don't worry I am not freaking out about this, just curious. No I do not think anyone else needs to worry either. I guess I need to scrounge up the refference to let...

How much should I offer for a 5' long tank?

Doggfather, excellent idea. I will check into that. Then again I guess I should just fix my pickup. (Nasty oil leak, may take too long to fix and then I would miss out on getting the tank, hmm) Defiantelly will not be shipped. I would be very happy with $150 if everything was in good shape...

How much should I offer for a 5' long tank?

 My buddy looked up 5' tanks from the distributors and the only one 5' long was 100 US gallons. That is basically what I was thinking of doing, but I was not sure if 100 would be too low. I guess I am probably never going to meet the person anyway, so if they do get insulted by...

How much should I offer for a 5' long tank?

My buddy works at a fish store. They have a bulletin board in front that people post things that they are selling, events, and other random flyers. Someone put up a flyer for a 5 foot long tank, stand, hood, and I believe lights. They just said "Best offer". How much do you think I should...

Do you worry about wood tinting your water?

I guess I did vote wrong (in my own poll even! :o :*) ). I should have voted "depending on the fish". Since I do not have any hardwater fish I did not think about it. :D I think a tank looks more natural with the tinge to it, so I guess I think it looks a bit better. I could not expect...

Do you worry about wood tinting your water?

I seem to see A LOT of questions about people trying to do everything they can to make sure the wood they put into their tanks will not affect the water. I have never cared about this, in fact I think most of my fish would preffer for me to get more driftwood in the tank (soaking in pond now...

    Substrate

I had just plain gravel in a 15 hex for months and the plants did fine. In fact they did great. In my limited experience I would say lighting plays a larger role than substrate. Once I replaced the bulb on that tank the plants took off.

    Is It Possible To...

That is what the nylon (pantyhose) is for. Tie off one end (or use a foot) put the gravel in, tie off the open end, and put it in. Why would there be a cycle if you are using the same gravel, plants, and filter? Maybe a small one from everything being disturbed, but it would be fairly minimal...

laser lights for a fish tank?

Every "laser" set-up I have seen is just LED lights, the same thing your remotes use, new stop lights use, new truck taillights, etc., etc.. If they are LEDs then there is nothing more to worry about then your fish looking at your light in the hood.

how long would you let your fish starve?

I would be more concerned about the water getting changed then the fish gettting fed. I would want someone to come by and check on the conditions rather than necessarily feed the fish. I would probably wind up having them feed the fish, but I would have it measured out first. Untill I get...

Juliis are nice. I went to all the lfs in my area and was planning on getting Sterbais earlier but they sold out. I have to wait untill next week to do it now, but that is what I am going for. If I did not get those I would probably go with the Juliis (which are different then the Pepper...

    Is It Possible To...

At least one person on this site has made the excellent suggestion of putting your old gravel in a section of panty hose and putting it back in the tank to save all the good bacteria. From what I have read on this site all the good bacteria is on the stuff in your tank and not in the water...
