    should fish be given away

I cycled with a full load and kept everyone alive. He's already well into the ammonia. I'd do a VERY large water change to begin with--50%-60%, then continue with a 10% water change every day plus 20% once a week. That should keep the fish alive, even neons.

    What fish with a Betta?

Some bettas are okay with snails, though. I have a snail in with one of my bettas and he has REALLY long feelers. The betta ignores him completely. So, keep an eye on them, but if the betta is pretty peace loving, it should be okay. For cories, I think three is supposed to be the minimum...

    What fish with a Betta?

Sure you can. Cory catfish get along with bettas, as do African Dwarf Frogs...just be sure not to get african clawed frogs. Snails get along with them too. Try to avoid any tetras or long finned fish, as well as anything remotely aggressive. Generally, any non-aggressive bottom dweller will...

    Very wierd question :)!

well, a snail will eat just about anything, sometimes even poop, I think, but they produce a large amount of waste themselves. you'll still have to do water changes and gravel vac, so it doesn't really matter in the end.

    BEST BETTA FOOD EVER!!!

True, I don't know how often it is occuring, but I presume it is not often, and probably a notation to the effect that it's a bad idea to do it often will warn him to keep moderation in mind. As for me, anything is possible. I am six feet tall. It's difficult to have a tank so high that I...

    BEST BETTA FOOD EVER!!!

So, what exactly does white bread do in the stomach of a human? I don't see that giving a little bit of crust to a fish on occasion would really hurt them. It might make them constipated, but so does freeze dried foods. Once every two weeks should not harm them, after all, what if you...

    betta in 10g

Well, like I said, it CAN be done and if your betta in the 20 gallon doesn't seem to be getting harrassed or vice versa, he/she should be fine. I just wouldn't do it on a regular basis.

    Betta Buddy??

Also, otos are shoaling fish. They need three or more to be comfortable and they are voracious. They tend to starve because they can't find enough algae. They're also notorious about dying in the first couple of weeks because they've been starved in transit. Just a warning. I would get a...

    cheap bettas

I actually have a very nice plakat/crowntail cross bred by wuv. He's purdy. Yeah, the tail may not be quite as defined as another fish, but it's still impressive and his body shape and coloring are beautiful. Good luck on the breeding, clueless! :)

    Colloidal silver causes disease!

I would think you'd probably have to be pretty iron deficient to turn blue too. I wonder if anyone has ever tried treating that with iron supplements? I dunno how commonly known this is, but the pinkish tint in our skin is a result of a chemical reaction between oxygen and the iron in our...

    ALMOST aggressive betta

Hmm...I have found this to be true as well, although the most that I have ever lost were one per move and usually it was the move from the LFS. I put that there as a suggestion. Really, if they seem to be calming down, I'd leave them as is, myself. That's a good point, SRC. Thanks for...

    Fish Ideas

You know, it can be kinda tough to single out that info, Redshark. There aren't many threads labelled 'exotic, colorful fish for the beginner'. :) lisanne, there aren't many *exotic* fish that are good for a beginner, mostly because they're usually exotic because they're more difficult to...

    betta in 10g

I wouldn't recommend black neons because they are VERY closely related to regular neons. It can be done, but it is rare to successfully combine bettas with neons. For the sake of your betta, I would not have any kind of tetra in there that is known for nipping. If you want a betta in a ten...

    ALMOST aggressive betta

To be honest with you, I break one of the cardinal rules of betta keeping. I have a betta in a ten gallon with ten neons. He's a pretty laid back fish and they leave each other alone for the most part. Now, I don't recommend this to anyone, because I'm pretty certain that I am the exception...

    Guppy pregnancy death

Hmm...there's a thought, although I don't think that was her problem, that she was pregnant from the store. *sigh* That's just not cool. At least I know my other female gives birth without too much trouble, 'cause I've got three babies of hers that are around two months old.

    StressCoat

Stress coat works immediately, although you might want to mix it in real good. I add the stress coat first and then put the water in. That generally takes care of mixing it up. Also, you can't really OD on stress coat. It's not that kind of chemical. Along with removing chlorine from the...

    Guppy pregnancy death

Well, I lost my first guppy yesterday, to complications in pregnancy, I think. She had never given birth in the two months I've had her, but she was pregnant the whole time. What I'd like to know is, does anyone have any idea how this might be prevented in the future? I really liked that...

Or more. My shipping off of aquabid usually runs around $35. He's pretty, although I wouldn't take him. I'm just not fond of marbles or grizzles.

    Rescue :(

:*) Thanks, wuv. I do like a good debate, but some of these 'discussions' are really getting out of hand. The thing is, I don't want to see debate stopped completely in this forum because of some bad apples. Maybe we can work together to shame those bad apples into behaving? :) So, dulce...

    why was my topic locked?

You know, I think Tokis has a very legitimate complaint. I, also, see no reason for the thread to be closed. Most of us here are responsible adults who *should* be able to debate ideas calmly and rationally. Certainly, some of us lose control and fly off of the deep end. These people can...

    My opinion

Tokis, I do agree with you that buying a poorly fish from a neglected store only helps the store, and I agree that even though this subject has been beaten to death, if it still creeps up, obviously it still must be addressed. There is nothing new under the sun and just because one person has...

    Rescue :(

Hmm...this is quite a blow up over what John said. You know, though, John is right. Technically, reality states that as long as a company can sell a product legally, no matter its ethical rammifications, they will continue to do so. That is simply the nature of a corporation. Now, that...

    Gave back my guppies

I'm sorry, orky. It sucks to have to give a fish back. I had to give my bala shark back because I wasn't sure I could upgrade tanks in time for him to move to a bigger tank when he needed it. I have pretty good luck with guppies. My three have outlasted my swordie. They also gave birth to...

    Betta Question

Actually, that sounds perfect for a betta. What kind of filtration are you looking at, though? It needs to be somewhat low on turbulence for the betta's sake.

would you guys keep a betta in this...

Hi, john. I'm from Fort Worth. I'm thinking about joining the betta society, but right now, they're just great pets and I don't have room for more. I probably won't join until I'm ready to breed. :) I don't think the mods mind a debate in here, John, as long as it stays civil and open...

would you guys keep a betta in this...

Just because I like a nice, *friendly* debate, I also think that bettas have more intelligence and awareness than people give them credit for. For one, they play. I have seen my bettas play with their food and I have watched the betta in my community tank 'herd' the neons around like a sheep...

    OMG!!!! look at this

My Damien looks a bit like them. I never could get a really good pic of him. I need to pull him out of the ten gallon and put him in a smaller container for a photo shoot. How do you take such good pics, anyway, bettamomma? I always have so much trouble....

    Acceptable betta tankmates

For those of you wondering about apple snails vs. mystery snails, I had it explained to me this way. They are the same species. The difference is that the mystery snails are the wild type, while the apple snails have been bred to have several different color shells. Beyond that, there is no...

    hi first post here

A 55 gallon should be okay for bala sharks, and they should be happy if there are at least three. They certainly prefer higher numbers, but I don't think this is a case where they should be taken back to the lfs. Just my opinion, though.

    a fish dream

Well, earwigs are real enough. We have them in my house. I hate them. They have vicious pincers on their butts. They are small enough to crawl in the ear and could probably pierce the eardrum, but they couldn't get further than that. Heh... I don't dream about my fish, but I'm sure it's...

    Sorority Question

Out of curiosity, why must everything be rearranged? Is this a territory issue? Also, what if you don't know which ones are more aggressive than others?

    4 ray betta

As far as I know, that's right. The tail veins start as one, then split once, and then once again. Personally, I think they look horrible in crowntails, but they can look really nice in half moon. :)

    Am I Overstocked?

Goodie. :) I don't know much about angels as I don't really like them, but it sounds like you're doing a really good job of not overstocking and making sure the environment is good for the fish. Kudos.

    Rescue boy...need some advice

Thanks, guys. He was trying, too. If it hadn't been for the columnaris, I think he might have had a chance. It just infuriates me that he was in that condition to begin with. I nearly know it had to be that someone put him in with another betta for some cruel sport. I didn't have much faith...

    glue

I wouldn't, simply because hot glue does not hold as well as silicon. If you could ever get the tank to hold water, it wouldn't last long. Hot glue is designed to work best on porous materials and simply doesn't hold as well on non-porous materials, such as glass. Silicon is designed to...

abstract, she also pointed out that the rule can't apply to fish over 2 inches that are thicker bodied than a neon. I think a 4 inch danio would be considerably thicker bodied than a neon. *grin*
