Okay, I'm Thinking I Need To Do This...

Perhaps he prefers it a bit darker. Can you fit a box (with one side cut out) over his place? Or maybe something to give him a little shade?

Very nice. Is there a binder or anything across the bottom or just gravel holding it in place? James looks bewildered.

All I want for the fish is for you to give it a good home. Shipping to the west coast will set you back 5 or 10 bucks though.

    Frozen Blood Worms

Be careful which brand you choose. Different brands sell different species of critters as bloodworms. I recommend Hikari brand, they’re smaller and processed better IMO. I like to put the “juiceâ€￾ in the big tanks, for the vitamins.

    Ummmm.... Are These Eggs?!?!

Man, that stinks. I’ve heard the same thing about lowering the water level. I’ve also heard of putting them in a shallow pan and gently stirring often to keep fungus at bay. Maybe someone who has actually done that will reply. The males will move the eggs around in the nest but, I’m sure...

    Probably A Silly Question..

I have one that needs a home. He was spawned last Christmas eve. He’s not breeder material but he would make a fine pet. I’ll post a snapshot if you’re interested. BTW; shipping from Chicago.

    Ummmm.... Are These Eggs?!?!

They should hatch tomorrow night. You can use 36 hours (plus or minus 12 hours) as a rule of thumb. You’ve probably already noticed some eggs falling and being retrieved by the male. When they hatch they’ll look similar but with little tails. The male will do all the work for the next five...

    Jumper Dried Out

I think females recover from that sort of thing quicker than the males do. If she’s eating well she’ll most likely recuperate nicely. Give her a quick “eye exam” by getting her to chase something waved in front of her tank. Make sure she turns to look at it with the other eye when it changes...

    Genetics Question

I just looked at V’s site again. That is an interesting hypothesis. I’m not sure how she calculates 75%, although, she has a new article on double tails that states “most” are DT geno. I wonder if other breeders have experienced this.

    Genetics Question

I think you may have misunderstood V. If one parent is a double tail (DT/DT) the offspring can only receive a DT gene from that parent. That parent has no dt gene to give. If the other parent is single tail (dt/dt) all the offspring will be double tail geno (DT/dt). If the other parent is...

    Genetics Question

One more thought on butterflies: Butterfly phenotypes can be dominant for one or both variegated fin genes. If father and mother are both VF/vf, then, he and his sister could possibly be vf/vf (non-butterfly). kali426 - I believe Betta Splendens have 21 chromosomes.

    Genetics Question

If father is a double tail and mother is not, he and his sister will be double tail genos. Each will get a double tail from father and a non-double tail from mother. With a double tail geno cross, 25-50-25 is the correct ratio. I find the butterfly gene to be tricky. As father and mother are...

    Are Bbs Essential For Fry?

I would be concerned about soap getting into the water. If you smell it in the air, it's probably gonna get in the water through the airline.

    Spawning Video

Here's a video I made of my pair spawning. I was able to capture the first few "embraces". The lighting is bad because I had to keep moving the camera. The female kept distoying his nest and he'd build a new one then I'd move the camera. Spawn Video

Texas Betta Society 2nd International Show

That really looks like quite a set-up at the last show. I noticed with exception to the first pic they’re all in the same type of jar. Are there rules on what type can be used? Do entrants bring them with? Are there rules on carding/uncarding? How many do you room and board at your place?

You also need to consider the extra amount of uneaten food in a larger tank. Larger perimeter and base area = more waste build up = more siphoning. Remember the three most important things: Clean water, clean water and clean water.

Well that’s cool then. I can keep an eye on him and see what to expect from the others in a couple days. I imagine he’ll be the first to be jarred. I can see my new spawn log will have considerably more columns. I think I’m looking for something more like a tracking number, to identify each...

    Fry Q’s - 4 Weeks Old

I have some questions concerning my 4 week old fry. I have 1 fry (I’ll call him “Spot”) which appears to be 2 days ahead of the rest, developmentally. When I noticed Spot sporting some nice caudal fins, I noticed the same, in most of the other fry, 2 days later. When I noticed his anal fin, 2...

Also, if they are planaria, you're more likely to see them on the glass than your fish. You should see small ones within 12 hours of cleaning the glass.
