    Java Moss & Flying Fox

If you mean Siamese Algae Eaters (Crossocheilus siamensis) that look similar to Flying Foxes (Epalzeorhynchus kallopterus), they are well known to eat moss. They love it. http://www.aquamoss.net/Articles/Siamese-A...quatic-Moss.htm

    Ada Amazonian 11

Does EC affect water chemistry at all? I've heard conflicting reports, including some of massive PO4 contamination. I'm sure that's sorted by now though.

    Ada Amazonian 11

Aqua Soil is effective on its own, especially with EI.

    Photoperiod

8 to 10 hours straight should be fine. If you have multiple tubes then a midday burst works well. Let's say you have 4 tubes. 2 tubes for 3 hours, 4 tubes for 5 hours, 2 tubes for 2 hours. 10 hours total. This is what I do and I have no algae. I don't have any algae-eaters either...

    Ada Amazonian 11

Nutrients in substrates will last a very long time if you keep the water column rich i.e. using EI. In fact it is possible to grow plants well in an inert substrate using EI. JamesC does this with excellent results using silica sand. ADA Aqua Soil is excellent and widely regarded as the best...

    12.5 Uk Gallon Set Up

Ensure you plant the majority with fast "weeds" to start, Hygrophila, Rotala, Egeria etc. Cover well over half of the substrate, planting the individual stems 1cm or so apart with tweezers. Don't use the lead weights. Don't prune the stems until they've reached the surface, then you can...

We have our own EI pinned thread here on TFF too - http://www.fishforums.net/Jamescand39s-Est...le-t104737.html Not necessarily. EI can be modified to suit lower lighting/non-CO2 as well. http://www.barrreport.com/articles/433-non-co2-methods.html

    12.5 Uk Gallon Set Up

An external filter is a good idea, for aesthetics and better circulation more than anything. Your plant growth will be performing the majority of the NH3/4, NO2 (and NO3/PO4) uptake. This is why you need to dose NO3 and PO4 via KNO3 and KH2PO4 to keep the plants well-fed. EI is safe for...

    12.5 Uk Gallon Set Up

Hi Paul, Nice to see you in planted. Mike gives good advice. I'm assuming you want high-light, CO2 and plenty of growth, without limitations. PC T5 is a good idea. One 55w tube would be plenty and span nicely across the tank (22"). I can personally recommend the Interpet Daylight Plus...

Example: High Fish Load 2.5 Year Old Tank Using Strict Ei

Yes. Plants need light and a host of nutrients to grow and therefore pearl. If any one nutrient is deficient then growth will suffer and pearling will likely cease. This is why EI is great. It ensures there are no deficiencies, providing light and CO2 are good. Simple eh?
  23. George Farmer

    Whats In Our Tap Water?

Plants can also "leak" O2 from damaged leaves, which is different to pearling.

The ADA stuff is very nice, especially if you don't mind the cost. With your budget I would be tempted to go ADA all the way i.e. opti-white glass braceless tank, ADA glassware (lily pipe, inlet, diffuser etc.) For a 90x45x45cm complete set up, you're looking at around £2000 or thereabouts...

There's PPS, but is very complex and relies on accurate testing. I wouldn't recommend it personally, not at the early stage of the hobby anyway. If you think EI is complex..... http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumap...ion-system.html There's the ADA system which works well but is...

    The Behemoth Tank

Bummer. What will happen to the old AS? It will still be useful for other tanks? Thanks for the info on altums. My LFS had some in this week. 8 Adults from a guy taking down his tank. They were massive, too big for my 150G. Beautiful fish though, nicer than colourful strains of discus IMO.
