I think the interest level and the model for formation of UKAPS is there.

We used a simpler is better method in our local plant clubs.

No membership dues.
Funds are raised via on line plant sales(done when funds are needed).
A web site forum mailing list is required and that is generally the only cost, often a member can maintain and or host that.
One member sets up a saving account for the treasury.
Little $ means little worry and bickering about how it's spent

1.Free Plant swaps, these may be done locally, or on line/RAOK's etc amongst members.
2.Fert group buys: this reduces cost, how many need 25kg of KNO3? Cost very little and you can share or trade of sell for $ for the club.
3.Local issues such as tap water, plant availability, where to get the cheapest CO2, lighting etc.
4. Open houses where you display your scapes to the group.

This is easy to maintain and likely can be done in the UK to help foster aquatic plant tanks and promotion of the hobby.

I'm from the other side of the pond, but I believe this model would lend well for your needs.

Regards,
Tom Barr

Thats Great Tom.

I think the Uk is ready for the birth of a plant group.
Start small and end Big!!!!!!
Theres a lot of potential.

Graeme.

you can use a web site that's already here etc, this one etc in a subforum, or a yahoo mailing meet up list etc.

This sounds pretty intriguing to me. I hate throwing plants away, I have a load of dry ferts I may never get to use plus, I have 1 litre home made 4dKH reference solution which seems to react with Bromo Blue as it should, which would take me a life time to use.

Dave.

Excellent. Thanks Tom.

I know I've discussed this with some members in the past but nothing materialised. I guess we need to just get it started and it will progress from there. Getting it started is the hardest part I suspect.

Sounds like a great idea. Needs someone to take charge.

If George could get a sneaky mention in PFK i'm sure that would help too :)

I agree with Voo that it would take a senoir forumite with credibility as a point of contact to coordinate things.

Consider my name put forward to help in what way I can. That`s my cards put on the table.

Dave.

This is a great idea. Several times I've tried to resurrect a local society in South Florida with no luck, so I really wish you the greatest success.

This has inspired me to be a little more dogged in my efforts in South FL.

:good:

llj :)

As a total n00b to plants and in the process of researching my first mini tank, I'd be interested in what the group would have to offer people such as myself who haven't got a clue!

If I can help out at all, I'd be willing :)

Good work, Graeme!

I'm happy and willing (and able I hope!) to help out where I can and perhaps my role with PFK etc. and as an "experienced" forum user can be of use here.

At first I was a little worried about spare time (or lack of) but the RAF are keen to see things like this, from a community-minded aspect, and I can use it as a secondary duty.

I'll do some thinking on this over the weekend....

This is a great idea, with the UK aquatic plant scene growing as it has been over the recent past something like this can only help in pushing it further forward. As George said getting it started will be the hardest part.
But once set up I can only see positives for the all us interested in this area.

i'd be interested in meeting up in an open house situation, be great to chat with a few like minded people. i must be honest though i'd only travel an hour or so, this may be an issue as were all over the place.

georges house isn't too far though, been there before.

i would only have a few plants to spare as i have a slow grower setup, anubias and java fern. i do get loads of tiger lotus plantlets though
