I have petrified wood in several of my tanks, some has been there for 3+ years and I've had no problems.

They can last an amazingly long time without eating. Try talking to him when you feed him,as corny as that sounds. Maybe wiggle the food a bit. What foods have you tried? By the way, welcome to the board!

How old are they, and what type of filter is it? I use a big plastic plant for the smaller fry to hide in, it gives them a better chance. As for caves and whatnot I don't use those as I don't want to encourage territorial behaviour, but that's up to you!

Ya know, it's an interesting subject. They say the ideal temperature for them is in the 82 degree range, but I just can't agree that a constant steady temperature of 82 can be comfortable. I believe a nightime drop in temp is perfectly healthy and natural. With that said, a guy in my betta club...

Nah, seriously out of the 1,000's of bettas I've manhandled, he's the only one to do this. Maybe he's just dramatic!

Firstly, I'm sorry to hear of your fish. How tragic. I hate heaters too. Secondly, I bleach everything. There's no harm in bleaching a tank provided you rinse properly.
