It is a planted tank i have 5 plabts in there. What do you mean by "...if so do you use CO2"?

    Panting fish

Appologies it was a typo  I meant to say nitrate <5mg/l. i.e. all my usual levels are good, possibly appart from 02 but I can't measure them yet and they may be OK anyway...

    Panting fish

But my ammonia levels don't even register on 2 different types of test kit, as indicated by my first post. Surely I'd lose fish is ammonia poisoning was to blame?

    Breeding net/trap...

Good ideas guys - the natural circulation of the tank has taken it into the path of the bubbles from my powerhead anyway.

    Panting fish

My fish seem to be always doing a lot of panting. I've just tested my water and here are the results: pH 6.8 NH3: 0 NO2: <0.1 mg/l NH3: 5 mg/l temp: 26C I've got a powerhead which pumps air into the water via a venturi tube and my LFS was out of dissolved 02 testing kits this morning. Is it...

    Breeding net/trap...

Thanks for that but my tank doesn't have a rim- it has a part solid glass/part glass sliding doors condensation lid under the wooden lid so I ended up buying one of the floating plastic variety. Now all I've got to do is work out how to tell when a platy is about to give birth or scoop up the...

    Breeding net/trap...

I was going to post this in the hardware section, but as I'm going out today to purchase one of these, I may not get an answer in time... ;) Anyway, my last batch of baby platys all got eaten (I'm not surprised, just would like to keep some) even though I have a lot of plants for them to hide...

    Algae???

Once it's softened up - pretty much all the fish in my tank dive in for this stuff!! My clown loaches love it and it's full of protein :D

    Great, thanks for that :D

What's this T5 lighting I'm hearing a lot about? Is it a brand or a type/colour of light?

    pH meter

If it's local you only need to remember the last 6 or 7 - the first 4 or 5 are for inter-cities/town calls. Besides it's no use having a snappy phone number if you don't have any electricity :P Wonder how many fish have been lost though... :(

    pH meter

There's nothing wrong with that - all yours start 555... :P

    pH meter

I know they can be expensive, but over the years so can test kits. Does anyone know where I can buy one (suitable for aquarium usage) in the UK - preferably online. Thanks

Cleanin crusty stuff off SH tank

They're probably just mineral deposits that have come out of soultion. If you're tank has fish in it just use hot water, if not some form of cleaning fluid followed by a thorough rinsing to get rid of cleaning residues. Try using something acidic if all else fails - maybe a vinegar solution?

    Adding a bottom feeder?

I love my cories and they even survived my tank cycle. I'd advise geting at least 2 - they don't grow much more than 2 or 3 cm and they like each others company. Mine never leave each others side

    Practical Fish Keeping

If anyone's interested, this month you get a free sample of fish food (Eco Fit) with this magazine. It's a floating food designed for ponds, but broken up into smaller chunks my surface feeders love it!! PS I work in the nuclear industry and am in no way connected with PFK or their publishers :D

    "Nutrafin clear" products

It definitley was suspended particles and I had my pumps/filters turned off for 3 hours afterwards. I've emailed Hagen to ask for advice. I'll post their reply here. I'm wondering if it's a chemical reaction with nitrate, but I'm sure and products you can add to a fish tank should react with...

    "Nutrafin clear" products

Has anyone else ever used this line of products? I was having a problem with suspended particles (before I added the Fluval...) so I got some "Nutrafin Clear Particulate" additive and followed the instructions for dosage... It's supposed to work by clumping all the particles together and...

    Clown loaches swimming oddly

My ammonia and nitrite are always zero, but I do have a problem with rapid production of nitrate. My tap water has next to zero nitrate and if I do a 20% water change my levels will creep back over 100 mg/l in 3 or 4 days. I've therefore done 2 things: 1. reduced feeding to once a day (I...

    water current

Well Fluval only make spray bars for their internal filters it seems. So I thought I'd buy one, take off the funnel shaped outlet that came with my 104 external filter and shove the spray bar into the rubber adapter that fits on the corregated tubing. The spray bar is too small in diameter. I...

    Silver Dollar Mystery

    Silver Dollar Mystery

I've read all the silver dollar threads in the forum and can't figure out the answer to my question. I bought 2 of these fish about a month ago and they were both about 1.5cm long. A month later, one of them hasn't grown much (if at all) and the other is about 4cm long (high etc :D ). I...

I've just invested in a Fluval 104 external power filter and it works a charm. No more suspended particles!! :D

    Please Someone Help Me.

What do your nitrate levels get up to after 2-3 weeks? I think most people change their water weekly or bi-weekly. I believe high levels of nitrate can leave fish more susceptible to disease although it won't kill them directly. I takes about 4-5 days for my water to go over 100 mg/l (tap...

    Clown loaches swimming oddly

Oh dear, he actually be dead now. I found him on the bottom of the tank - stiff as a surfboard.... It's actaully the first tropical fish I've lost :-( if you don't count some small lampeyes that were mistaken for food by my angels.... Do clown loaches need to be in groups? If so I need to...

External filter < gravel or < water

That sounds really interesting - could you expand and that please? Which compartment would I put any filter wool into - the final basket above the carbon and biological media?
  33. N

    water current

Excellent, I may add one to the output of my new Fluval 104, if anything the water shoots out of that at a higher rate than my powerhead on medium setting!

External filter < gravel or < water

I've just bought a Fluval 104 external filter to suppliment my UGF that wasn't removing small suspended particles from the water. Instead of having 2 powerheads I've removed one, putting the outlet of my fluval in the same position and put the intake in the middle back of the tank, about 10 cms...
