Thanks Lazarus - that does perhaps explain a little. But what causes ph to drop? We are in a soft water area and it wouldn't take much for my ph to drop to 6 or below. The lfs said my ph of round 6.4 - 6.8 was fine. Another lfs advised us to add coral sand to raise the ph - rather than water...

Looks lovely. Got the same backing that I've got for my 260l. :) I think it's the lighting on the background plant that looks a bit like the falling roots of a surface plant ;)

Syphoning from anything that is not higher than the destination will not work. You could use an electric pump - how about a cheap small internal filter? Using the motor bit and inlet tube only. Keep the plug and socket well away of course!! But use the inlet pipe as set up with the guard on it...
