New A New Home For My Babies

Hi All, I am moving house and need to find a new home for my babies. I would take them with me but I don’t know if I will be living in this country for long and I don’t want to put them through the stress of moving twice, let alone abroad. I have two Goldfish and a Tench. One goldfish is...

Blue Gourami - Severe Bloat On Both Sides Of Front Of Body

Hi All, I have a Blue Gourami with severe bloating on both sides of the front of his body (sorry, my camera has gone kuput so no piccie). The water quality is good with regular changes. I am not using dried food for feeding and none of the other fish appear to be affected. I am treating as an...

    Help Needed With A Tench

Thanks for that, we will mention it to the Vet when he returns from his hols. Bumble seems to have improved in the last 24 hours. He is eating more and is finding food more efficiently. Here's hoping. Regards, Pog.

    Help Needed With A Tench

Hi All, Sigh. The symptoms Bumble was displaying have not subsided. He is still floating at the top of the tank with the upper part of his body exposed to the air. The cyst is back, although the Vet did say that this may happen and that further treatment is possible. THE PROBLEM...

    White Cloudy Tank

Hi, I experienced the same thing when I moved my fish to a larger aquarium. The cause in my case was bacteria bloom (too much bacteria). I understand that it is hamless. Mine went away after a few water changes, once I had found out what it was. Being the cautious person I am I was adding lots...

    Help Needed With A Tench

Hi All, After an agonising discussion, Debbie and I have concluded that Bumble would almost certainly be better off in a pond. We have been reluctant to do this as he has been in an aquarium for best part of 7 years and he seems inseperable from the two Goldfish he shares his home with and it...

    Help Needed With A Tench

Good question :) The vet anaesthetises the fish by using a medication in the water (not clove oil). They then remove them from the water and place a tube in to the fish’s mouth. Through the tube, they pass a mixture of the anaesthetic and oxygen enriched water which passes through the gills...

    Help Needed With A Tench

Hi All, Took Bumble to the Vet today and he diagnosed the lump as a cyst and drained it. Bumble was glad to get back to his aquarium. We saw him nudge one of the Goldfish and turn-upside. We like to think he was showing-off his operation scar - he will be dining out on that for weeks :)...

    Little Worms

Hi, Interesting ... We have worms which seem to be identical. Ours turn in to tiny green flies and are apparently harmless. We have had them for ages, no one seems to know what they are or how to get rid of them. Our fish are also Goldfish but interesting enough, if we need to medicate the...

    Help Needed With A Tench

The anus is not red or inflamed. A thought just occurred to us though. We never had any problems until we purchased some live plants from a new aquatic centre. We certainly did not have snails either. They are cute enough but it limits the treatments we can use in the tank.

    Help Needed With A Tench

Thanks for the info. Whilst changing the filter, I noticed long, white, stringy faeces in the aquarium. We have added Melofix to the aquarium just in case there is a bacterial infection. We will be monitoring everything very closely.

    Help Needed With A Tench

It does look like a cauliflower and they are white. I wouldn't doubt your eyesight too much, they are not very good pictures. :) One of them (the smallest) is like a cauliflower. They are white in colour. I wouldn't doubt your eyesight too much, they are not the best pics :) Sorry all, I...

    Help Needed With A Tench

Whilst keeping an eye on Bumble, we have noticed on both the Goldfish that they have a bump / lump in the centre of their bottom lips. On one fish it is smooth and on the other, it is nodular. Any idea what they are and could this be related to Bumble's problem? All suggestions / comments welcome.

    Help Needed With A Tench

We have spoken to the specialist and we will be taking Bumble to see him at 09:00 on Thursday morning - the earliest he could see him! Meanwhile, Bumble spends most of his time swimming in and out of the air line bubbles. We will keep you posted. All ideas are welcome.

    Help Needed With A Tench

Hi Wilder, We are awaiting a return call from a vet who specialises in fish. Meanwhile, we are changing the aqurium water twice a week in order to keep the Nitrate low (we live in a high Nitrate area) and keep the algae down in order to keep the Oxygen level up. Bumble spends a lot of time...

    Help Needed With A Tench

We have him on bacterial meds now. This is not the first time either. Isolation isn't an option as he gets very stressed when we take him away from the others. Do you think it may be worth seeking advice from our Vet?

    Help Needed With A Tench

Hi All, Can anyone tell us what this cyst-like appendage is on our Tench (indicted by the red arrow)? He (or she) is about 7 years old and approximately 23cm in length. We have noticed that it is getting larger of late. It may be a coincidence, but he / she has been hanging around the surface...

    Urgent help with goldfish

A big thank you to everyone for your input and concern. I am delighted to report that Blob is on the mend. His scales have closed-up, the reddening has greatly reduced and his appetite has returned. The next anti-internal bacteria dose is due on Tuesday, so we have a great deal of confidence...

    Urgent help with goldfish

Hi All, Our tropicals are nice and settled but a strange thing has happened with one of our goldfish. As you can see from the picture, he has a patch on his body (to give you an idea of scale, he is about 34cm in length) which consists of slightly displaced scales with a reddening around them...

    Newby say hello

Well SPLiSH, we are now ofFISHally the new owners of our neighbour's aquarium fish and frogs. "Evil", not a bit. Her head was spinning with technical information by the time I had finished. I then tugged on her sleeve and said "can we have them". She immediately said "Yes" and I must say, she...

    Nitra-Zorb Filter (or similar)

We had a Nitra-Zorb filter in our tank (although any similar type of filter or brand would have been the same) and we found one of our Dwarf Congo Frogs had its foot trapped in the filter's fibres. His foot was completely entwined. It took us 20 minutes to untangle the fibres from his foot but...

No, the big tank is my own established disease free tank. I think the confusion arises from the fact that there were, at one time, three tanks. Regards, Ken.

    Nitrate / Ammonia problem

Took breezer40's advice and squeezed out a jumbo poly filter and jumbo course filter from my large tank in to the one with the problem. We then added a Nitra-zorb pouch. The aquarium has now stablised and the ammonia and nitrite levels have are now zero. We will continue to monitor it but this...

    Nitrate / Ammonia problem

Hi All, To cut a long story short (full story in Newbie Forum), we had to take fish out of a tank with a sick fish in it and place them in a new (non-cycled) tank. We would not normally have done this but it was an emergency and this was the only logistically sound way of doing it. We knew...

    Need help to identify fish

Thanks Sylvia. The info on the New Guinea Red Rainbowfish was invaluable. Would I like to meet the person who sold these fish to our neighbour  We tried to identify all the fish at our local aquatic store (in fairness, we didn't have the pictures at that time) and the size of tank they...
