Hi All,

Can anyone tell us what this cyst-like appendage is on our Tench (indicted by the red arrow)? He (or she) is about 7 years old and approximately 23cm in length.

We have noticed that it is getting larger of late. It may be a coincidence, but he / she has been hanging around the surface of the aquarium, although not gulping at the air.

The water quality is good and as a precaution, we have treated the water with a bactericide (5th day of treatment today).

He is eating and defacating normally.

Can anyone point us in the right direction?

Many thanks (or indeed, tanks).

Ken & Debbie.

FYI;

400L tank, 2 Gold Fish (one of which is 32.5 cm) and our Tench. We now have some snails thanks to the eggs we aquired in some Canadian Pond Weed :)

Can you get a full side on view and a view from above if you could. Is it on the opening of the vent? The fish on the first pic looks rather square shaped to me, is that usual and have you seen its abdomen distend at all? It looks like a tumour to me.
How long has it had it and at what rate has it grown?
At that age your tench should be well over a foot long maybe even one and a half foot. It may be that the fish is stunted and that may explain the weird shape of the abdomen to me.

Pics won't work for me here is abit of information on cyst, but i am not the writer of the information.
Myxosporidiosis

Symptoms:

Fish exhibit numerous white cysts on the skin and gills. Cysts can become very large causing the skin overlying the gills to swell, which will prevent the fish from getting enough oxygen. Because this disease affects the gills, fish may be seen at the surface, acting like they can't get enough air. In severe infestations, the fish may bloat up, with tumor-like protrusions and eventually die.

Cause:

The myxosporidean parasite Henneguya.

Treatment:

This disease is fairly difficult to treat. Increased aeration in combination with merbromin baths is the only current method for treatment.

Cant see the pics now either Wilder, but it looked like it was at or in the vent and resembled a prolapse or something pushing out. It may well be a tumour but it was white and not completely round but like something twisted. On the side view it was covered by the fishes skin so looked like a volcano really, but only a cm or so out.

Sorry Guys,

Don't know how the pics dissapeared from our server, but I will upload them again in a few minutes once I have put the arrows back.

Thanks for your help so far.

Regards,
Ken & Debbie.

Hi All,

The original pictures have been reinstated. I have included some more which may help.

Regards,
Ken & Debbie.

Can you issolate him and try him on a bacterial med.

Some information on tumours but there is no hope if it is a tumour, fingers crossed, not the writer of this information below.
Tumors

Symptoms:

Fishes with tumors have distended bodies or lumps on the skin. Unusual growths or swellings may occur in any part of the body. If they occur in internal organs they tend to cause firm, noticeable swelling to the general body shape. Tumors are usually confined to one area of the fish but they will continue to grow over time, weakening the fish until death occurs.

Cause:

A variety of environmental factors such as chemical pollution or severe viral infections. A predisposition to tumors may be inherited from a fish's parents.

Treatment:

There is no chemical remedy for this condition. Surgical removal of tumors can be attempted, but there is a high frequency of recurrence.

We have him on bacterial meds now. This is not the first time either. Isolation isn't an option as he gets very stressed when we take him away from the others.

Do you think it may be worth seeking advice from our Vet?

Yes, if you are prepared to pay for treatment then please do, i just think theres something wrong with the whole shape of him. It does look like a tumour or some sort of prolapse/hernia of some kind to me.
I have a list here of fish vets but you will need to scroll through for someone near you if any. This was courtesy of PFK magazine.

Please let us know what the vet says.

Any news pog.

Hi Wilder,

We are awaiting a return call from a vet who specialises in fish. Meanwhile, we are changing the aqurium water twice a week in order to keep the Nitrate low (we live in a high Nitrate area) and keep the algae down in order to keep the Oxygen level up. Bumble spends a lot of time swimming in and out of the air line, so we thought that might help. You know what it's like, you have to feel you are doing something.

We are not entirely convinced that it is a tumour, we think (and hope) that it may be a cyst. On close examinating, it doesn't appear to have turmour like qualities.

He is still hanging around the surface with his Dorsal Fin out of the water but he is eating well and he still seems to enjoy being stroked and the contact he received whilst we were taking the photgraphs - bless.

We will keep you posted as to progress.

Regards,
Pog.

We have spoken to the specialist and we will be taking Bumble to see him at 09:00 on Thursday morning - the earliest he could see him!

Meanwhile, Bumble spends most of his time swimming in and out of the air line bubbles.

We will keep you posted.

All ideas are welcome.

Once you get him sorted you should try and home him in a pond. I dont know why he is in the bubbles a lot, maybe something is irritating him.

Whilst keeping an eye on Bumble, we have noticed on both the Goldfish that they have a bump / lump in the centre of their bottom lips. On one fish it is smooth and on the other, it is nodular.

Any idea what they are and could this be related to Bumble's problem?

All suggestions / comments welcome.
