I have some mixed feelings about PETA. I love that they stand up for animals that can't speak for themselves. But, they also believe everyone should be a vegetarian, and that no animals should be kept as pets. If they had their way, we would have no pet fish, or birds, etc. and who's to say they won't stop at cats and dogs? So, I feel they have their good points, and their bad points. Just my 2 cents.

Sorry but I think we should keep this subject on the ebay items for bettas and not on Peta.

That was a good letter though and I really hope they take those stupid items off the site.
 
FYI, just for kicks - I sent a message to Ryan Sweet (guy who is selling these things). Here is what I wrote:

I wanted to contact you today about your Glass Block Betta Aquariums (IF you can justify calling them an AQUARIUM) - and give you a listing of things that are SO VERY WRONG with this. First of all, bettas are very fragile creatures - and should NEVER be subjected to being shoved so cruelly through a funnel or sucked out the tiny hole in top of the tank. I would imagine that the trauma that the fish suffers while slamming into the rocks on the bottom of tank upon impact could potentially be pretty severe. Secondly, you recommend using spring water. You might want to do a tad bit of research on your fish keeping, sir - bettas, and other fish in general, need conditioned tap water in order to have the minerals they need to flourish. Spring water will simply not provide that. Thirdly, you recommend dumping the water out into a small tupperware bowl IN THE SINK, then setting the fish up on the edge of the sink while you rinse the tank. BETTAS JUMP. You have just given several bettas a certain death sentence when they jump to their deaths as they slither down the drain while someone is cleaning their tanks. As if the way you are transporting these fish in and out of the tank isn't horribly cruel enough, the tank is way too small to leave for 3 - 4 weeks between cleanings?!?!??!?!? Good grief - a tank that size should be cleaned out at LEAST 1 - 2 times each week. AT LEAST. What a shame that someone feels the need to scam money off unsuspecting folks who don't realize how cruel they are being to a fish because they followed your recommendation. Sad, and utterly pathetic. FYI - I will be forwarding this video on to the SPCA and Humane Societies in your area to see what they have to say about it. You might be expecting some sort of contact from them.

If your going to target people for tanks like the Spongebob one, email the company that makes them. Its a whole lot more satisfying to watch a big company try to worm its way out and end up in a dead end than to email a seller only to be told thats what it says on the label. Take Hagens 3g 'goldfish tank'. I got one for Xmas, so had to put a betta in it (darn, don't you hate things like that :p). Emailed them saying it was too small for a goldfish, they said 'oh, its only meant as a starter and you're meant to move the fish later'. Scanned the leaflet... Hmm, where does it say that? NOWHERE. Hahaha, just got to email them back now :)

Not surprisingly, I have done that too. lol
I call places who display bettas in vases that are too small...
I call places who put out little packages, like for instance easter basket packets with little tiny death trap bowls to put them in...
I do always look on the back of any products that make me mad and call and email. Pretty soon I will need to quit my full time job just to scout out fish mistreatment cases! I wanna work for the SPCA!!!

Penn Plax is the highest on my list.
I also emailed the place that makes the spongebob tanks.
I also called some guy - hmmm.... the name of the contraptions he was peddling online escapes me at the moment.... but his recording when I called gave me the impression he was a money hungry old bachelor who didn't give a rat's behind about what was good for the fish.

I also am on the warpath about places who do things wrong for other animals, too - for instance, I go after stores who sell food for guinea piggies that contain sunflower seed shells - they can be deadly to them. Anyhow - what usually ends up happening is that I contact these places to complain and they send me COUPONS TO BUY MORE OF THEIR PRODUCT. Um, DUH?!?!? Like I want any more of the product if I HATE it. Kaytee is famous for that.

My point in saying all of that was... in the cases when that happens, call their home office and rant until you get ahold of a higer-up person. Trust me - it works pretty well. heh heh :whistle:
 
Oh yes, Penn Plax are possibly the worst large company. I've emailed them before but didn't get a reply. Funny that :) Oh dear.... You're encouraging me. I just so happen to have an email account soley for complaints, and an ebay account for that alone too. BT internets good for that sort of thing, you get loads of free sub-accounts and you don't need to put credit card details in for ebay.

Well, you can get a hold to sugar 'n' spice of sumter sc. They had about 15-16 kittens in a 2'x4'x3'!!!!! It had layers but only 2... They had to use some of the room on the bottom for a "staircase" to get to the "feeding level". It was slack imo. But they were well fed, and not kept in feces...
