Thinking Of Going Marine

Well, the consensus was that 4X2X2ft was minumum on page 2 for the tangs, and you are nearly a foot under with the Roma 240. As said, I don't realy know enough about fish to comment, but I suspect someone will say the foot-print isn't big enough. It is also easier to stack rocks on a wider base without incroaching on swimming room, so that is a second good reason for a tank that is wider than taller.... Just my not-to-informed opinion :good:

Is something like a Rio300 out of reach. I know is still isn't a great front-to-back size, but would be better IMO. The Fluval tanks are better build IMO, but the Rio will be easier to upgrade if you are going with T5. Up-gradeability isn't an issue with halides, as the lighing on both will be scrapped to make way for it  They both cost about the same second hand. I don't remember a lot being in the new price TBH. I suppose Fuval vs Juwel is down to you and your styling preferances realy, though you don't realy want the filter from either kit tank. How about trawling Ebay to see if there are any glass boxes of good size going spare? If any need repairs/leak, they are easy to fix up (and cheap too). Look in the Hardware section for info, or PM me if you don't want to DIY any fixes/don't know whats needed. ;) I'm starting to go into the tank repairs/building to be sold on business now to pay through uni, but will fix tanks that are not to sell on also :good:

I maybe able to squeze the Rio 300 in, will have a look at the space tomorrow.

Once again i think my CUC would be a little on the small side so would the following be enough for a 240 or a 300 tank

1 Cleaner Shrimp
1 Scarlet Hermit
4 Dwarf Blue Hermits
9 Turbo Snails

Would the lighting on either the Fluval Roma 240 or the Juwel Rio 240 be enough for the soft corals that i would want in my tank. Fluval, one of each 40watt PowerGlo & AquaGlo. Juwel, High-Lite light unit including tubes 120cm, 2 x 54 watt.

Corals & Polyps Wanted

Grenn Star Polyp
Red Mushroom
Blue Mushroom
Kenya Tree
Devils Finger

Am now aimimg for the 240 size!

Just a quick update, I am still in the process of research (i did say that i would do my research and take my time). The tank that i am looking at is either a Juwel Rio 180 or a Juwel Rio 240. The only thing against the 240 is that it will be going upstairs in my bedroom so i have to keep an eye on the weight aspect. Stocking remain almost the same.

Still no tank Andy? Hopefully soon you will be able to acquire a tank and start your dream reef setup.

Regards

Gone off the custom tank idea then. Both those Juwels are very good tanks that you have your eye on, but since you will be heavily modifying the tanks for marine, maybe it would be an idea to look at the Fluval ranges of tanks

1. Yeh think it will be less hassel than a custom tank (for me anyway)
2. I do like the Juwel tanks
3. I was under the impression that i wouldnt need to modify either tank!

These are what i am looking at:

http://www.rocketaquatics.co.uk/juwel-blac...inet-p-725.html -240

Well, you can run them un-modified, but you need to be aware that Detritus can collect in the filter compartment. Seffie I think it is (possibly trod) run a Juwel with the filter in and say it does not give them said issues, but I know of a fair few that say the opposite. Either way, they are (IMO) un-sightly, and I'd personally rip the box out to reclaim the space and avoid potential Detritus build-up issues  If you want a skimmer on, you'll have to remove both flaps to get it in, or cut the flaps. The tubes go a way back (at least of the 180), meaning the I-bar needs sliding forward, so that means reducing the size of the front flap, and replacing the back flap with a new, wider one, with appropriate holes cut into it. For anything other than softies and certain low-light LPS also, you'll need another tube or two under there.... Basically, you're looking and ditching the I-bar and flaps if you want a full reef, and getting a luminare or pendant before going open-topped with it... If you want a sump, you'll obviously want to drill it unless you like wet, and white stained, floors and are hence willing to risk an overflow box.

I have juwel 180 - I used it for brackish and never had a problem with the internal box - but then I kept a good powerhead in there, was also able to keep the heater in there which was great. My current rio 400 has the box taken out

240L really isn't all that much weight for a floor. And it's a pretty long tank to spread that weight out, so the wieght issue wouldn't really enter my thoughts on the decision making process

I think that it will be the 240. How heavy is salt water? Would 30kg of live rock be ok or would i need more?

i will just let you know marine fish take a hell of alot more looking after than tropicals if you miss 1 single
day they will all die ok :)
