Water change time lovelies! Still wondering about how long it'll take those sponges to colonize is my main filter.....

If you put mature media in the filter it will happen quite rapidly. Why worry, just leave the nasty sponges in & the colony will work from those until they migrate to the new media.

Just make sure they have a source of ammonia to keep them going, as in keep a few fish in there. Test often & hope for the best.

To be honest I'm a bit worried about my 36 gallon. I just removed the entire hang on back filter and I only used some small bits of used felt from that filter to spike the canister. Keeping in mind the canister was supposedly already full of mature media. It was running on a 90 gallon cichlid tank about 5 hours before I set it up on my 36 gallon after a 35% water change. I used the power of positive thinking............. :hyper:

Worst case scenario I'll have to steal some more media from my other 2 tanks.

I have a xp2 on m 46g lol I bet the xp3 is a killer for a 36. I have a xp3 on my 75 but use a powerhead for stronger flow. It's more then enough filtration though unless I crazy overstock.

I'm not using the penguin anymore. The xp2 was is more then enough on the 46g. All my plants a swaying around nicely.

Yeah, the power of the XP3 is ridiculous, especially since the guy didn't have the flow control regulator. I found one online for $9.99 and for now I just pointed the spray bar slightly upward so my plants & fish weren't in a whirlpool. So far so good. Full tests on that tank in a couple of hours.............

How do you load you media in the XP3? This guy didn't have any of the stars or bio balls but he had large ceramic rings & small ceramic rings in a bag.

Well the sponges belong to a sponge filter I'm planning to use for another tank that's currently running a power filter, but not sure how long until they'll be colonized so can't leave them in there and hope for the best, as they'll be in a totally different tank, already with fish in it :/

need to do a water change. my stats have been so badly lately ive stopped testing the water and i just do a 50% wc every couple of days. hope my new filter comes up to speed sooner rather than later!

Thanks for the craigslist idea for a used canister filter. I paid $60 for an XP3 that was filled with cycled media! Right after you mentioned it I checked and found this deal. I owe you one................ :good:
NP!! Remember that craigslist is good for a lot. if you ever decide you want a bigger tank, i got a fully loaded 75g with stand for 50 bucks! I love craigslist

HEY LOVELIES!!! I Gots crickets for my Oscrs, Gts, and Jacks!!

sponges on the bottom. ceramic rings next and other media...i have ceramic and sponges. Then purigen and sometimes carbon in the top with a little floss on top.

The only way to be certain is to test, & test again. When you think you've tested enough, test again anyway. I haven't used my test kit in over a month but I'll be testing the carp outta my 36 gallon in another hour.

I'm going to test the 20 sand also, just to be safe since the filter is different now & I'm not sure the good bacs are working until I see the test results.

Thanks, that's what I did. I put 2 coarse pads, then 2 fine pads in the bottom. In the middle I put the big rings. I put the little rings in the bag in the top, then a separator, then the donated media felt pieces from my 36 & 20 gallon tanks.

I'm going to pick up some stars, bio balls & the fine polishing pad for the top this week. I may get a Nitra-Zorb packet too...............PetSmart has them available.

just dont my water change.. turned the filter back on and it keeps blowing bubbles? literally filled the tank with tiny bubbles! the danios are loving it tbh

fish always seem a lot perkier after a WC aswell?

Hey Lovelies!

I just came back from the park, where I went for a walk with my mom.
Warning! Rant incoming:
1. Them freaking bicycle riders keep hogging the whole park! Can't freaking walk peacefully because there's always some jerk who has to ring his bike bell behind us. I wish the dude who allowed so many bikes to invade the already narrow alleyways of the park would get his feet run over by a bike. He rented bikes to everyone who went into the park. -.- What about the old fashioned walking? Oh, people are too lazy for that nowadays, got to hop on a bike and do less effort. -.-
2. There are literally armies of cockroaches crawling across the city streets, in a straight line (kind of like marching soldiers line). They're over 3 inches long (around 8 cm). Why doesn't anyone take action against this sea of tiny freaks of nature?

Step on the freaks!!!

Maybe even ride a bicycle up the line of the little buggers.......

Purigen Ruskell! Seriously. My water was really cloudy after I re-set it up, the next morning it was crystal clear. I've never had water this clear before EVER!!!

Carbon doesn't work this good and you can recharge the purigen in a bleach solution ever few months, so it doesn't need to be replaced often like the nitra-zorb.

I don't like bikes and pretty much won't catch me riding / driving anything that has wheels.

I hate bikes. Really hate them.
