Operation Marine 2.........now 3

If you are suffering with Nitrates I would reaserch NP Biopellets I am looking at adding them in to a reactor on my system therre are some very good articles on them reducing phos and nitrates to 0

If you are suffering with Nitrates I would reaserch NP Biopellets I am looking at adding them in to a reactor on my system therre are some very good articles on them reducing phos and nitrates to 0

Funnily enough i have literally just read a thread about them and another product from seachem in a homemade reactor.

Just done a few tests did a huge water change again yesterday.

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0.1 think this may have arisen from some nori i forgot to remove and has caused a bit of a reading
Nitrate 100+!! this is worrying me it went down to 75ppm last water change but is now where it started even with the change yesterday.

Going to cut right back on feeding and remove some rock to try get more flow around the tank and see if that helps. And another huge water change

Just took some questionable rock out the tank. Been in there since I started came from a mate but think it's ocean rock or so calcified it's lost it's porosity (sp) hopefully it will aid flow

Hmm a little help here cos I may be missing something obvious.

Tested params again just now did a big 55ltr water change earlier today.

Ammonia 0
NitRITE 0.1 was the same 3 days ago although some nori has been in the tank over a couple hrs as I have been busy and not had cance to get it out.

NitRATE 100+ again this is after the water change fresh mix is 0 on all three params using 0 TDS water H2ocean/Instant Ocean salt mix as changing to H2ocean fully.

Been feeding once day for last week 1cube frozen pinch of flake and nori every other day for tangs.

You haven't got an old batch of h2ocean have you - test the water for nitrate before you put it in the tank, but after you have added the salt.

Is your skimmer clean and running well?

Are your running nitrate remover like purigen? Sorry, I can't remember, think you were going to buy a reactor but that was for phosphate wasn't it?

How much are you feeding and do you rinse the food (bet you do :good:)?

Last water change was tested as i had that thought last time and came out 0 for everything

Skimmer was cleaned yesterday air tube, cup and pump and is skimming well as normal.

Not running nitrate remover but will pick some up tomorrow as I am going to swallows to get some suction cups. I found an old 600lph juwel powerhead which is now running my phosban reactor with rowa in it. Added a spray bar to my fluval earlier to get some more flow through my new cave it looked a little slow/dead inside it, fluval is now running at full pelt as its not running the phosphate reactor anymore.

Feeding is cut down to 1mysis cube and small pinch of flake per day a sheet of nori every other day which is not a lot for the stock I have.

Tank looks a state as tubes are everywhere but do plan in tidying it up.

Got 55kg of live rock and roughly 35xflow from power heads.

Decided to bite the bullet and do what should have done from the start and that's to sump the tank.

In talks to sort out a cabinet, either diy with supplied high gloss door/panels or a completely bought high gloss cabinet.

Tank will be completely stripped and i mean stripped. It will jut be a glass box, no beech trim/combinded braces that come on these aquairums. I will brace it myself with glass from local glazing company drill it myself and add weir myself.

Was planning to get whole new setup but financially that's not viable so this is next best option and will get the tank back in the lounge.

Watching to see how you get on :good: however, am wondering if you are overfeeding, I dont feed mysis every day, try cutting that down to every other day - so one day mysis the next flake etc

I have to be careful because of the copper band and mandarin as they eat frozen and mandarin sometimes eats flake but copper band doesn't....yet

Ah, think you have your answer there then :good: get some purigen in there, bet that will make a difference

Just ordered 4 100ml bags of it from flea bay read that 100ml does 100gal so should have more than enough to get control again.

Phosphate seems to be getting lower again now external is not powering the reactor and getting an airlock in the down tube numerous times a day.

Swallows in colchester have an small trigger in today was erally nice but refrained from getting it due to my param issues. They have also started doing across and had 2torch corals in aswell.

Good choice to resist as he would just add to your Nitrates

Sump is a great option Purigen is a good aid to reducing Nitrates but it sounds like something is creating them.

a few things to think of might help

Is the flow around your LR good ? Any dead spots?
How heavily stocked are you ?
Are your Fish big waste producers ? Tangs Triggers etc.

Better to cure the problem than apply bandages :)

Feeding wise does not sound excessive (But I heavily feed mine 2 cubes a day + 25ml Phyto + FLake and Copepods)

Just had a quick flick through you recently rescaped ?

How where yur nitrates before you rescaped ?

It could be some rock that was not exposed to flow prevously is now exposed to flow and is not yet established properley so you could be suffering a mini spike.

Mini spike is possible I guess but.

My nitrate has always been high I think it was down to dead spots so as I said I took some rock out that I believe was not aiding filtration the purigen is there for help but i know its not the cure I am determined to get the route cause of it. Biggest fish are my 2 tangs regal and yellow around 4-5" each

Flow is 35x tank volume
