Operation Marine 2.........now 3

Your copperband is looking lovely, specially considering the condition you originally rescued it from.

Redundency sucks... though if you find work soon enough, maybe the redundency pay will cover the "time off" (it did for me, all 9 months of it...), if anything I am in a better position because of it. :good:

I have not been there that long so redundancy pay is not that much. Its more that it wouldve been thanks to our union who got a guaranteed £3000 payout for anyone whos been there 2yrs or less as government statatury would only be around £700ish.

i have a plan that i am working on already so see if it comes off

Well i finally got down to rescaping the rock i got from a reefer a while back. Didn't use my acrylic rods as still hoping for an upgrade and want to use them in that to make a hopefully impressive scape.

Made the pile that was dumped in, into a cave bombie type thing, using minimal aquascape putty to secure a few carefully placed rocks. The left side looks a bit crap now, but is functional as it's a bombie that has a few tunnels through it.

Have been in a battle with some cyno, i am running a FR509 reactor with rowaphos in but just bought a phosban reactor to hang on the tank as the deltec runs off an external but it fails sometimes due to length it has to run.

Think you have just hit the same patch that I was at about four or five months ago  I must admit I got a little fed-up with it and even at one point considered selling the tank  You will come out the other side :good: trust me, I'm a salty :p

Meh Cyano sucks usually removing phosphates sort it or flow but I know it does nt resolve it every time a rep left some tablets in the shop that cured a major issue for someone. I will try and find out what they are for you I think it might be a new product.

Just curious do you run Carbon ?

I will get shot of it just takes time, and lots of rowaphos! The fact my external loses it's syphon sometimes due to how the pipe work runs doesn't help.

Have found out why the cyno battle is not going my way, I haven't tested the water params for a while and decided to do it this evening.

Ammonia 0
Nitrite couldn't find the instructions for the salifert kit
Nitrate 100+ !!!!
Phos 0.06 waiting for media to arrive in post

That's with a 25ltr change today, think I will do a major 50-75ltr change and see what results I get.

Tested RO water butt 0 nitrate in there and 0 TDS swell which it should be.
Top up container reading 0 too so is salt mix container so wondered what the he'll is causing the high reading.......then remembered filter floss! Changed some 2days ago in reactor(lost top sponge) so thought that should b ok then remembered more was in my external and cannot remember when I put it in there, quickly hoisted the external out e cupboard and removed a tray of floss that was looking very mucky, think i found my source of nitrates.

Anyone know the salifert nitrite test instructions I have lost mine can't remember the amount of water to use, 1 or 2 ml and how long to swirl e post before leaving for 3mins.

Yes seffie whoops indeed,, have had igh nitrates anyway, but never been that high! Going to get a huge container that i use to hold rock when moving tank around and use it for a large water change. After dinner though

My phosban reactor and rowaphos arrived today, but I forgot to order any 12/16mm tubing and my eheim tubing is 16/22mm doh! Means a trip to LFS tomorrow when I get up to go get some so I can get it running asap.

Did my 50ltr water change earlier now going to test the nitrate levels. See if it's made a dent.

I did that too

Here are the instructions:

This test offers two ranges:
Low range: 0.2 - 10 mg/L (ppm) as nitrate.
Medium range: 2 - 100 mg/L (ppm) as nitrate.

Clean test vial and scoop after use. Store this kit in a dry place.

Warning!

KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.

Procedure for both ranges:

1. Fill test vial with 1mL of water.

2. Add 1 level scoop of NO3-1 powder (compress this powder against the inner side of the powder container).

3. Add 1 level scoop of NO3-2 powder and swirl gently (do NOT shake) for 30 seconds.

4. Let it stand for 3 minutes.

5. Color comparison:

Medium Range:

Place the test vial on the white part of the color chart and compare colors looking from the TOP. Use diffuse daylight when comparing colors.

If the color corresponds to a value lower than 10mg/L nitrate then it might be better to compare colors as shown for the low range (see below).

Low Range:

If the medium range color comparison procedure gave a reading lower than 10mg/L then you can use the low range prodecure. This will increase the accuracy.

The color for the low range procedure has to be compared by looking through the SIDE of the test vial.

The white part of the color chart has to be held firmly against the opposite side of the test vial. Use diffuse daylight when comparing colors.

The color is, by looking through the side, amplified by approximately 10 fold. For this reason you have to divide the color chart values by 10. For example 2 will become 0.2 and 50 will become 5.

Thanks for that seffie but I asked for nitrite lol

Think its similar though 1ml and level spoon swirl 10secs leave for 3 mins?

 i'm so tired, sorry

The temperature of the water has to be above 18C or 64F otherwise the complete color will not develop within 60 seconds. If the water temperature is below the above mentioned values then allow the water in the test tube to acclimate at room temperature for 10 minutes prior to testing.
Warning!

KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. Not for consumption. If swallowed contact a physician immediately. In case of contact with skin wash with plenty of water. In case of contact with eyes, wash eyes immediately with of water and contact a physician immediately.

Instructions:

1. Add with the syringe 1ml of water in the test vial.

2. Add to 1 level spoon of the NO2 powder. Swirl the contents of the test tube gently for 20 seconds. Allow to stand for 3 minutes.

3. Place the open test vial on top of the color chart on a part of the chart which is whiteand compare the colors looking from the top. Read the corresponding nitrite content. An intermediate color corresponds to an intermediate nitrite content.

The nitrite values are in ppm nitrite. If you prefer a reading in ppm Nitrite-Nitrogen then multiply the reading by 0.3 or use the table given below.

Higher Sensitivity

After your aquarium or garden pond has cycled you will need a much higher sensitivity. This is easily accomplished by looking through the side when comparing colors. Hole the test tube with its side against a white piece of color chart. The readings have to be divided by 10. In this way you will be able to detect 0.01 ppm as nitrite or 0.003 ppm as nitrite-nitrogen easily.

Nitrite Table
ppm Nitrite
0.1 (too high)
0.2
0.4 (danger)
1.0
2.0
4.0

Cheers so it's 20secs not 10 that was the bit I was unsure about.

Just fitting my phosban reactor, temporarily fitted to the outlet of my external as the pump I was gonna use I've lost the suction feet for, bit of ingenuity require as the 1/2" pipe needed didn't fit my outlets for the external. Will ,post pics later to show what I come up with.

What pump is running yours seffie, eheim compact or something else? Going to have to source one.

Here are the pictures

COmparison shot, thats a 1000ml tub of rowaphos

photo-vi.jpg

How i got around the different sizes of tube and external connection, pushed the new 1\2" tubing into some eheim 16/22mm tubing which then connects to the external fitting.

photo-vi.jpg

The reactor in action. Not happy with its position but thats due to running it off my external as my dogs ate the suction feet for my eheim pump that i was going to use.

Still attacking the nitrate issue with large water changes, as quick as ro is filling my water butt it's being used. Second 50+ltr change this week 1.88kg of salt a time! Although is helping my salt change from instant ocean to H2Ocean lol
