Ok Just Got This... What The Heck Is It?

yea he's coming along nicely. i had to remove him form my one tank b/c he was fighting too much with my alpha male convict that is the same size. they both are like 5-6". the tail and other fins dont look like a firemouth to me, but who knows. nd the vertical stripes are always there. he did try to mate with my female con, so maybe i can try that cross. or jsut let him pair off with my JB parrot and see what i get.

i'll keep updates as best i can :good:

Any ideas what you would breed him to. looking at it, does he look like a he? or does it look female? based off the territory and the fact that iot paired with 2 known females so far suggests ot me that its a male. also the long veil on the dorsal, i've noticed that its long like that on males and females its much smaller and round. is this a way to sex accurately? i mean i could sex if he was known. but as a hybrid its like anybody's game and looking for all possible sexing methos outside of probing. i odnt htink he would liek that very much and dont know anyone that would do it for me.

thanks for all the responses os far :D

Going from the finnage I would say male but you never know.My convict x sajica females get a bit of colour on their bellies like cons although its more blue than orange.I dare say if yours was female it would show some too.Saying that though FM are very hard to sex so it really could be either. If it seemed to pair with female fish though its probably male.

So you're sayingthat it looks liek it might jsut be a full FM and no hybrid? if so i wouldn't mind. I love him to death!!!

Outside of a firemouth, what would you suggest breeding him to?

No no I still think its a hybrid im just saying that FM are hard to sex so a mix would be just as hard.

I would try breeding him with the JB especially if its already shown an interest.I wouldnt be too disheartened if its infertile as my male BP x Cons were.

Alright thanks. He spawned with the convict, but before the eggs hatched we had ot move the fish. we didnt liek the idea of that in a community cichlid tank.

Yea i wont be too disheartened if he or his babies are infertile. but he laid fertle eggs with the female con. so fingers crossed that it wasnt a fluke and it was actually him.

should i move them fro mthe tnak, they paired off in what is a semi community. nothing but a pleco and a few other bottom dwellers. i had a jag i nthere but i wanted ot move it to a friends and it died (along with a few others- including 2 female convicts) in transport.

i will try that spawn. i mean its back at my old house and my sister who is good with fish is taking care of them and keeping me updated, so i wont be able to get mroe pics for a while, but i'll try to keep updated.

JB x FM/Con? Hybrid should be interesting i mean whther you believe JBs are shortbodied cons or convict x BP, the result is the same, there is convict and he already bred with a convict. ooo i'm excited. i've had convict fry that died, fertle jb eggs that never hatched (got eaten by bottom dwellers) livebearer fry, but never an actual hybrid. :D

I'm so excited!!!

Hi - new here, and I've been out of the aquarium hobby for about 5 years - since my Managuense finally kicked the bucket at age 9, but I used to have a variety of cichlids (and will again soon, thanks to a 135-gallon wet/dry setup a buddy just gave me)...

...as soon as I saw the first photo, I thought "Red Festae". Not convinced that's a hybrid, but...I've been wrong before.

Best of luck.

Its not a festae.

I have a new FM, and this one "i think" either is a dull FM or a X Convict, My FireM has alot of red under its gills with the lil black spot on it, this one doesnt really seem to show it as much as mine but could be due to the hybrid?

i have a texas which looks exactly like that ¦ so my bet is that is it a texas, but its early days

I'm going to place my money on FM/Con hybrid. Not real good with cichlids, but I've been looking at keeping both species, and thats what came to my mind first.
