Ok Just Got This... What The Heck Is It?

i still think it isnt a pure convict though. it doesn't have the aggression of one. it is the most peaceful fish in the tank and it is the biggest. so idk. time will only tell.

I've been keeping and hybridizing cichlids for a while now and I can tell you that it is a convict x firemouth. I don't see any JD in it.

Your also the guy that says theres firemouth in flowerhorns

Seriously its will show more colour as it grows and hopefully then we can tell what it might be.

well one of them died in a fluke accident involving me on vacation and the roommate feeding the fish for me (not his fault he didn't know and it didn't cross my mind to tell him before i left) but the second one i got looks very similar and i believ this one to be a boy (no orangish belly). but they were the same size when i got them and it hasn't grown much, so i'm thinking it's a slow growing mixture. it does try to court with the female convict i have in the tank and she obliges and courts back. but still no eggs anywhere in the tank (that i can tell). the dot on it's side changes colors though based off it's mood. i noticed (this one naturally has darker verticle stripes) that the stripes are normal whe it is content and the dot is black. when it is stressed its body will go completely pale with very little visable striping and when it has its "mean" face on its stripes get darker and the dot turns a gold/yellow in color. i don't know if this helps any. the body is a purpleish blue tint and it is getting little greenish/blueish/yellowish (depending how the light hits it) little speckles (like a JD would get- not saying it has JD in it, but like those dots). it's fins still have that blue-green tint at the tips (means it's happy w/ its environment from what i was told about cons and their hybrids)

well outside of the slight color change, it hasn't grown much in size (if at all). i will try to get pics up when i can.

this mystery fish definatly has convict init. just looking at it your can tell but the colour and stripes. dunno what the other fish is. the only cichlid ive ever kept is an angel but i wish i could help you lol :fun:

There IS firemouth in flowerhorns. However, it was a certain specimen that actually had the gene. Some have it, some don't. simple as that

now that I look at him again... he MIGHT have A LITTLE festivium in him... I could be wrong... I haven't crossed festiviums too much.

Just as a suggestion, try posting in the cichlids forums but don't mention you think it's a hyrbid nor that it was from an 'assorted cichldis' tank. It may not actualy be a hybrid at all but everyone is assuming it is because of what you've said and where you've posted.

i've doen this and it just got burried with noone responding. i don't remember what exactly i wrote, but i'm sure it was along similar lines. people told me to go to the hybrid section. it was actually the first place i tried and since i got no answer from there i went ahead and went to the hybrid section thinking it might be a hybrid. i will try again though :D.

thanks for the suggestion! :good:

Any new pics of the mystery fish Nevergone?

like i said the last one died, i had 2, they looked absolutely identical. i will get pics up shortly. to me it is looking more and more likea convict, but not gaining that "fatness" in the girth that is common with convicts, i'm actually starting to consider firemouth cross, but some things are missing, i will post up some pics asap.

Ok, as promised here are some updated pics of the hybrid. I don't even know at this point if it even is a male or not . Maybe you guys can help. These are the best pics I could get. It comes close to the glass when I don't have the camera but as soon as I raise it up to take a pic, it runs away :/ . It's kind of cute, but annoying at the same time :D.

Color update (and size), it has grown to about 3.5-4" in length (hasn't grown too much in length) but grew a slightly larger girth. It now has red outlines on all of it's caudal, dorsal and anal fins. The fins (including ventral) are a pale orange in color (being more intense closer to the body) with light blue metallic dots in them. The stripes are permanent with a dark dot that extends from the center stripe on its body into its dorsal, and only in that one spot. Well except for the very pale one right before the caudal fin. The body is the same pale orange as in the fins. The pattern look similar to what we could consider a tiger's, but only much paler and subtler. The lips have rounded out along with the head.

As for activities, it hangs out a lot with my (known) female convict. They haven't spawned to my knowledge, but then again their favorite spot is inside of this sunken ship thing or under neath the bog wood (which there appears to be no nest under there. So as for gender I don't know for sure. Otherwise, the shy reclusive nature is still present. This is the least aggressive fish in the tank. If you would like any other info, please let me know. I think I covered most of it. Like I said I promised to update and now I have. It is so much more colorful than it was when I first got it. To bad the other one died though  . Maybe I can see if the guy has anymore by asking the lfs to see (if they still have any contact info from the guy) They are really nice fish.
