Jtnova's Marine Journal (Rip!)

Yes, common hitchhikers - be careful of brightly coloured ones though, keep your eye on that yellow one zipzap

whats wrong with the bightly coloured ones?
i've got some little bright pink ones that look like their shells are covered in corraline.

Just bought some new stuff:

Hammer Coral

I placed it on the substrate, because anywhere else seemed to have too much flow. Will it do ok under 4x54w actinics? or should i kick the MHs on as well? I currently have htem off because i don't have any SPS coral and the tanks been getting to 80F+ with a 4-6 hour photoperiod.

The pictures aren't great, but once i get my dslr lens back I can take better ones!

Still waiting out the ich episode.

I'd swap two of the Actinic tubes for Whites personally. Hammers don't like light directly from a Halide, and they need more White light than just Actinics

can they be acclimatized to MH light? The tank is 2 feet tall. Alternatively i can put it under the lip of a rock or something.

I have it on a 4 hour photoperiod split twice in the day (2 hours and then 2 hours later) to keep heat down and then 10 hours under actinics.

Which white bulbs would be the best and should I swap out 2 on 1 side, or a blue on each side?

Position it to one side and not directly below the halide and you'll be fine...once thought neccessary, blue light is mainly for our viewing pleasure and corals need white light for their symbiotic algaes to produce food and survive..any marine white tubes of 10000k and above will be fine

good to know! i knew actinics were just to bring out the colors, but i thought they at least got some benefit from it!

I'm gunna swap out two of the blues for whites!

Update!

Went to the LFS and bought the following new additions:

2 false oscellaris clowns who have already paired up. (i am trying to get them to host by taping pictures of clowns hosting anemones haha)

pink long tentacle plate coral

Also swapped out 2 actinics for UVL actinic white bulbs.

I have a question, though. Do I need to spot feed my plate coral? I feed brine shrimp to my clowns and it seems like some of it gets to the plate coral... How do I spot feed?

Pics to follow!

If the plate coral is a fungia I usualy just squirt some mysis at the tentacles and let him feed himself for some reason my shrimp leaves the fungias food alone.

Would brine shrimp work? I haven't seen my cleaner shrimp go anywhere near the plate coral, he usually stays at the top. Do you just mix the shrimp in with some tank water in a dropper or what?

Mine takes brineshrimp as well I just sieve the food as normal then suck it up with a long pippette and squirt it at the tentacles not sure if it is needed but mine looks great puffed up all the time :)

spot feeding a couple of times a week really helps them along...bet your shrimp will start to pay it attention when it's feeding,lol.....
Good idea with the clown pic too...a mate showed his a video of hosting clowns, don't laugh, for a few days and it worked a treat !!

haha a video would be awesome, i'll have to get one and hook it up to an lcd monitor!

Ok cool, i'll squirt some brine shrimp a couple times a day into it!

I just noticed hundreds if not thousands of little bugs which I assume are amphipods? all over my rocks! mmm fish food

Update with pics!

The clowns won't stay still for long enough for me to get a good pic, but here's the mandatory FTS:
