hi new to this site but kept fishes for a while now, well ive got a tank and its bit dirty had to for few months now, am i able to do a full water change and clean the entire tank and rocks and stuff, then refill and put fish back in? or do i do normal part water changes? if did a full one wouldnt the ammonia spike again? please help with advice.

If you feel your tank could do with a proper strip down clean it's perfectly possible.

Put all the fish in buckets or plastic storge boxes and keep them covered and warm while you do it. As long as you keep the filter media wet and don't clean it out with tap water you won't lose the bacteria and won't get an ammonia spike

Make sure you've checked the temperature and dechlorinated the new water before you put the fish back!

Oh, and make sure you unplug the heater and give it time to cool down (only needs 5 or 10 minutes) before you try and take it out of the water

Oh, and don't forget to post some pics when you're done; we love gawking at pictures of other people's tanks on here

I wouldn't do a 100% water change, I'd do about fifty, keep as much as you can of the current water as you can as the water chemistry of the tank water is likely to be different to the tap water.

thanks its just sey up perfectly at the moment and dont wanna disrupt the fish or the tank too much.
