Your right about the java fern, its looking a litle big, and is starting to make your tank look smaller than it is, and i was never a fan of the glosso it just didnt work, glad you come to your sence's mate.

I'm not overhauling just yet Simon.

I'm replanting the glosso and intend keeping it until I'm out of the country for a few months (Apr-Aug 06). I still really like it actually, it is just a little invasive for the long-term ease of maintenance. I respect your opinion though, if you don't think it works then so be it, one cannot argue taste after all.

And it's "senses" BTW . Merry Christmas!

When did I say that? I must have been drunk! Dutch is far too much maintenance and the overall look is not to my taste.

I know my stem plant, Mayaca fluviatilis, isn't the best addition to my tank but you cannot deny it looks pretty cool when pearling.

I've been experimenting with my camera's macro mode, unfortunately it doesn't have super macro or optical zoom as other (more expensive) cameras do so I've had to zoom in digitally.



My task for tomorrow is to rip out my entire glosso and re-plant 50 or so healthy plantlets - anyone want any free glosso?

Expect some other layout changes too, I've got a few new ideas, nothing too bold though!

It all came out in one big "rug".

I was up until 1am last night trying to figure out a new layout using the same plants. I still haven't decided. One thing I have come to realise is that my fern is really getting too big now. I placed it in the center and it nearly fills the entire tank! I will be pruning back the larger leaves today in the hope of reducing its overall size. I'm tempted to bin the glosso completely and go for lower maintenance; fern/Crinum roughly central, Anubias and sag around perimeter with an empty foreground.

Mine started to grow stringy and upwards toward the light. I knew straight away I had a light problem. (and Pmed you) Thanks again for the assistance thus far, no doubt I'll be in touch regarding the revamp in the new year.
Is that ordinary black quartz gravel you have in there or is it Aqualit or the likes of.

Thanks mate. The quartz is plain mixed with Dennerle Deponit.

Pity you cant get $20 for every 2x2 inch piece like HC in the states.........i would just replant it until you had a better alternative, hard to beat its carpeting ability, ive seen nice Tropica HC over here recently, i might try that next, although i believe once that gets going it can be as bad as the glosso for maintainence.

Thanks everyone. Due to family commitments the tank has taken a back seat. The sag and some glosso cuttings are still floating as we speak! I have formulated a new layout though. I'll post some pics when I get the time to actually do some planting.

Wowzers George, Its great to come back to the forums after a long time and see your journal still going strong. Might i say that your journal in particular has inspired me a great deal. The carpeted glosso looks great, no Amazing!!! but i especially enjoy how committed you've remained to the Java Fern that grows in the back of your tank. By far the best Java fern i have ever seen! Pretty soon thats the only plant you'll have room for
Those are the luckiest Cardinals in the world!
